Mischief by Lacey Dailey Review + Giveaway

Title: Mischief

Series: Circuit #2

Author: Lacey Dailey

Genre: New Adult Romance

Release Date: February 20, 2019

Blurb
Mischief was my greatest kept secret. The side of me I’d never expose.
There was nothing on earth that rivaled the rush I got when I sat down inside
Circuit every night, fingers twitching with the need to use hacking to change
the world. Mischief lit me on fire and there was nothing that could compare.
Or so I thought.
Brett Maddison burst into my life, hair like honey and dimples deep
enough to make any man’s knees weak. It was then I learned the truth. Mischief
was no longer the only thing that caused my heart to pulse two beats faster and
blood to blaze beneath the surface of my skin.
The feelings I had for Brett knocked me off my course and took me on a
rollercoaster of emotions I’d never felt before. It took meeting him to
recognize what I’d been missing, and suddenly, Mischief wasn’t the only thing
in my life I craved deeply.
For a split second, I thought I’d hit the jackpot in life. I was proven
wrong the moment unexplained emails began to flood my inbox and the questions
they brought went unanswered.
Then I got my answer.
And everything changed.

My review:

This was a pretty good book. It turned out to be the second in a series, and even though the story of Ace and Brett was a standalone, I think the book would have been better if I had read the first one. The “bad guy” was the same in both books but in this one he’s already in prison and unable to actually do anything to the group. Also, it was pretty easy to figure out the meaning behind the messages.

Ace and Brett do have a great relationship. Both are dealing with trauma that no one else seems to notice. They are each other’s rock and support. I liked how they encouraged each other. They are also quite funny together.

Overall, not a bad book at all but not a favorite. This book was like meeting someone at an airport and chatting and having a good time while you are waiting together, but knowing you will never see them again and are fine with that. I’m glad I read it but won’t seek out the rest of the series.

I scanned him though I didn’t need to. I knew what Ace looked like. Had every inch of him memorized like some Grade-A creep. His hair was still in the knot it was in
last night, but it was flopped over and hanging by his ear. There were loose
pieces falling down his neck and one stuck to his eyelash. Sleep and lack of
coffee muted the green in his eyes. I watched as he yawned and scratched his
chest, his T-shirt lifting to expose skin right above his waistband. His
knuckles mindlessly brushed the exposed skin.
I wanna be those knuckles.
He cleared his throat. The barbell in his eyebrow raised when he gave me a look.
“You checking me out, man?”
I snorted, flipping him off. “You wish.”
He winked and turned around, shaking his ass before he started down the hall. “Let’s
move, sugar lips! I did not start my day off making breakfast for a lazy hunk of man meat.”
“Are you flirting with me?” I shouted.
“I sure as shit am!”
I chuckled and rolled out of bed, dragging on the first pair of sweats I could find. I
trudged down the hallway and slid onto a stool, dropping my head to the
counter. “Since when do you cook?”
“I cook.”
“No, you do not. You live off Red Vines, Slim Jims, and leftover takeout.”
“Well, today I cooked. So eat your damn food.”
“Fine, mom,” I mocked, sitting up straight. I wasn’t at all surprised to find a turkey
sandwich sitting in front of me. Ace didn’t subject himself to food norms. He
ate whatever the hell he wanted when he wanted. If he wanted pesto chicken at
eight in the morning, that’s what he’d eat.
“He made me a sandwich,” I joked, sinking my teeth into the bread.
“Fuck you,” he spat. “I was too lazy to make spaghetti.”
“Dude, we got any pickles?” Crumbs went flying from the small sliver of space between my lips.
He plopped down on the stool beside mine. “I’m not your pickle handler.”
“Bro,” I snorted. “You could not handle my pickle.”
But I definitely wanted him to try.

Tomboy_1600x2400

Ice Knights defenseman Zach Blackburn has come down with the flu, and my BFF—his PR manager—begs me to put my nursing degree to use and get him back to health. Of course she would call in a favor for the most hated man in Harbor City.

But when he’s finally on the mend and I’m sneaking out of his place, everything goes sideways. Paparazzi spot me and pictures, plus accusations that I slept with him, fly faster than a hockey puck.

At first, all of Harbor City wants my blood—or to give me a girlie-girl makeover. But then…the team finally wins a game. And now this fickle town wants me with the big jerk twenty-four seven.

Argh. I never slept with him the first time! But no one will listen. Then the grumpy bastard goes and promises to break his no-fan-appearances rule to help raise money for a free health clinic—but only if I’m rink-side at every game. That’s not a deal I can turn down.

But when the team keeps winning, and I realize there’s more to him than his bad reputation, suddenly remembering to keep my real hands off my fake date gets harder and harder to do.

Tomboy - Teaser 4 AN.jpg

Excerpt:

The blaring ring echoed off the bare walls of the nearly empty mansion as Fallon Hartigan marched down the hallway with murder on her mind.

As soon as she got to the source of that ringing, she was going to give Harbor City what they wanted most and kill the most-hated man in hockey. Sure, she might get arrested, but the metro area would probably throw her a parade. She turned the corner and stopped dead in her tracks outside the open double doors leading to the overpriced defenseman’s bedroom.

The man—who’d been puking his guts up less than twenty-four hours ago—was in the middle of a king-size bed, wearing nothing but a smirk and a bed sheet that was draped so low across his hips that she could see miles of those V lines south of his hard abs. Like she was a newbie nurse on her first set of rounds, her breath caught, and a blush she most definitely did not want to appear started to burn her cheeks. Damn her pasty Irish skin.

Still, she had to admit, if only to herself, that the view was fucking amazing. The man was a professional athlete and had the muscular, inked-up chest to prove it. Practically against her will, her gaze traveled over the plentiful ink across his pecs and lingered a few breaths too long on his silver nipple rings.

Seemingly indifferent to her perusal, Zach swiped his thumb across his cell phone’s screen, ending the incessant ringing.

“About time,” he said, his voice a mellow, low rumble. “I’ve been ringing for you for almost ten minutes.”

He dropped his phone on the small table next to the bed and then lounged against the headboard, managing somehow to look down his nose at her even with their current height differential.

Forget killing him, she was going to go after her bestie. It was Lucy’s fault Fallon was even here.

She squeezed her eyes shut and counted to ten as she recalled all the reasons why the man was a menace and not the solution to her three-month-long sexual dry spell.

He was a selfish player.

He was surly to the press, to the fans, and probably to his neighbor’s dog.

He’d banged a puck bunny tattooed with the logo of the Ice Knights’ most hated rival.

She counted to another ten while remembering why she couldn’t off him.

He was Lucy’s client.

He was, for some incomprehensible reason, one of her bestie’s friends.

He had the skills to turn around the Ice Knights’ so far shitty season if he could remove the giant chip from his shoulder and start playing as if he actually liked hockey again.

Exhaling a deep breath, she reopened her eyes and barely noticed his muscular shoulders this time as she moved away from the door.

There. All better.

She’d managed to pack away the Hartigan attitude, and her temper hadn’t even made an appearance. Bully for her. Now to get back to that cool, clinical demeanor she strove for whenever she was on the clock.

“You rang?” she asked, managing to keep a good 73 percent of her annoyance out of her tone as she walked farther into the room.

About Avery

USA Today bestselling romance author Avery Flynn has three slightly-wild children, loves a hockey-addicted husband and is desperately hoping someone invents the coffee IV drip.

She fell in love with romance while reading Johanna Lindsey’s Mallory books. It wasn’t long before Avery had read through all the romance offerings at her local library. Needing a romance fix, she turned to Harlequin’s four books a month home delivery service to ease the withdrawal symptoms. That worked for a short time, but it wasn’t long before the local book stores’ staffs knew her by name.

Avery was a reader before she was a writer and hopes to always be both. She loves to write about smartass alpha heroes who are as good with a quip as they are with their *ahem* other God-given talents. Her heroines are feisty, fierce and fantastic. Brainy and brave, these ladies know how to stand on their own two feet and knock the bad guys off theirs.

My review:

I loved this book! Fallon is a trauma nurse and one of seven siblings. Her best friend (and future sister in law) Lucy is PR rep of troubled hockey player Zach. Lucy is on her way out of town on vacation when Zach gets horribly sick, and instead of making Lucy cancel her trip Fallon begrudgingly agrees to go help him. She never thought a good deed would go viral in such a wrong way but it did.

Once Fallon and Zach stopped throwing up their armor at every conversation and allowed their vulnerabilities to show, they really had a meaningful connection. They have completely different backgrounds but have more in common than they expected. Both are quick to fight for and defend what – or who – they care about. Zach also needed to learn that he can let people care about him without expecting to get hurt. He had so much growth during this book.

Fallon was awesome, though. She is feisty and confident and can completely take care of herself. She also rides a skateboard (I’ve always wanted to but never could!) and literally saves lives on a daily basis.

This was a feel-good sports romance, and unlike the cliche in movies, the tomboy does NOT need the girly makeover to get the guy and succeed at life. And that is a much better message to put out into the world.

My personal assistant—a.k.a. half my brain—has abandoned me to have a baby. Alright, alright, I’m not a total jerk, but the temporary virtual assistant Carla left in her place is driving me crazy.

I’ve repeatedly refused to fill out Amy Walker’s way-too-friendly questionnaire. But somehow, she ninjas me into giving up details about my private life—all while suffering her oh-so-subtle jabs at my likes, dislikes, even my system for running my business.

I don’t care what she heard, I am not a problem child. I just know what’s tried and true.

At first, her feel-good P.S. quotes sounded more like B.S. Yet our emails and texts gradually take on a new dimension, and I find myself thinking of her as something I haven’t cultivated in a long time. A friend.

Maybe she’s right. It’s time I get a life. Starting with stepping out from behind the screen and putting my feelings on the line. I’ll never know unless I try.

Note: Contains a grumpy, workaholic tech CEO with a guarded heart, and a virtual assistant whose skills border on diabolical. Also, two cats named Ramen and Sushi.

Did I misread it? Is there a possibility that this was a typo?

For one magical night…
I was Cinderella at the ball, sipping champagne and dancing under the stars with the most gorgeous man I’d ever laid eyes on.

For one magical night…
I lived my fairytale and the man before me was my dream come to life…my very own Prince Charming.

As did my handsome prince.
So, just like Cinderella…I ran.
All the way home to New York City…
To lick my wounds and nurse my broken heart.

It wasn’t pretend.
He really is a prince.
And he’s searching for me.

My review:

*happy sigh*

What a great Cinderella story.

Claire and Rand meet at a wedding and have a fairy tale night together, but a case of mistaken identity makes it hard for Rand to find her. But even if he does, how could they have a relationship when their lives are so different?

I did love this one. The first thing that I absolutely loved was that Claire was not in her early 20s. She is 40 and Rand is a couple years older. They both have friends and established careers and lives. And while I have nothing against New Adult books, it is so nice to have the maturity of experience in a relationship and not the angsty drama, self doubt, and second guessing. When Claire and Rand have an issue, they talk about it. They may argue about it, but there’s no big dramatic breakup and weeks of whining that could have been prevented if they had taken 5 minutes to talk.

Sorry, tangent there 🙂

Claire and Lizzie are almost another love story themselves. Not romantic love, but soulmate best friends who live an ocean apart. I loved their friendship and unconditional support of each other.

Claire and Rand, though. They are perfection. The sweetness, the romance, the dresses, the passion… just perfection.

This is a fantastic Valentine’s Day read.

The minister glanced between them. In a low voice he asked,
“Are you ready?”
“Yes,” they both said.
He raised his voice so the congregation could her him.
“Michael and Rowan, marriage is a promise between two people to love, trust,

A commotion at the back of the chapel stopped the minister

She recognized their wedding planner Stephanie’s voice.
“I know. I’m here to stop it.”
