Lies FOR WEB.jpg

Betty Dawsey knows that breaking things off with Thom Lange is for the best. He’s nice, but boring, and their relationship has lost its spark. But steady and predictable Thom, suddenly doesn’t seem so steady and predictable when their condo explodes and she’s kidnapped by a couple of crazies claiming that Thom isn’t who he says he is.

Thom is having a hellish week. Not only is he hunting a double agent, but his fiancé dumped him, and thanks to his undercover life, she’s been kidnapped.

Turns out Thom is Operative Thom and he’s got more than a few secrets to share with Betty if he’s going to keep her alive. With both their lives on the line, their lackluster connection is suddenly replaced by an intense one. But in his line of work, feelings aren’t wanted or desired. Because feelings can be a lethal distraction.

My review:

When I start reading a book for review, I confess I usually have forgotten what it is about. I read the blurb when I sign up and only pick books that sound interesting to me, but generally I have no idea what I’m getting into when I start a new book.

Lies began like most other romance novels, the female lead talking about her romantic relationship with her best friend. In this case, Betty is packing up her belongings and leaving her fiance Thom. Thom is too emotionally distant, absolutely never prioritizes Betty, and is very lackluster in bed. Perfectly average and very boring

This book, however, is like thinking you are watching 27 Dresses then being dropped into the middle of Mr & Mrs Smith. I was beyond “pleasantly surprised” – the book went from run of the mill romance to “holy crap what just happened??” Betty is quite surprised to learn that Thom is not an insurance adjuster after all.To stay alive, though, no one else can know that she left Thom. What follows is a fast-paced, intense, and exciting journey across both geographical and emotional distance. Betty wasn’t in love with Thom the insurance adjuster, but Thom the secret agent is a completely different person.

I loved this book. It takes the reader on a roller coaster of emotions and made my mouth drop in shock more than once. Lies is going in my re-read list, for sure.

Sidecar Crush by Claire Kingsley with Lucy Score

“I tried to think of something—anything—to calm my raging hard-on. One wrong move and Leah Mae would rub up against it and that was liable to kill me dead on the spot.” — Jameson Bodine

Model turned disgraced reality TV starlet, Leah Mae Larkin, crash lands in her hometown of Bootleg Springs to lay low while a scandal threatens her career. She can’t shake the feeling that her agent—and supposed fiancé—manipulated her into the role of made-for-TV homewrecker. Connecting with her roots is just what she needs, and Bootleg Springs is home to her father, moonshine, and her childhood best friend, Jameson Bodine.

Only there’s nothing childlike about Jameson—a man who turns scrap metal into art and isn’t afraid to throw down on a rowdy Friday night with his brothers and hellcat sister. He might not say much, but still waters run deep. Seeing the ring on his crush’s finger? He doesn’t like it, but he can’t wish it away. No more than he can wish away the trouble his family is in, with evidence pointing to his late father in the cold case disappearance of Callie Kendall.

Jameson and Leah Mae are just two friends reliving their summers together, blowing off steam, and having fun for the first time in a long time. But Leah Mae is realizing what’s really important in her life, and it isn’t what she thought.

And sometimes steam turns into sparks—hot as molten steel—and friends aren’t just friends.

My review:

This is the second book in the Bootleg Springs series by Claire Kingsley and Lucy Score. Since they are all available in Kindle Unlimited, I’ve been reading them back to back. It is SO nice to be able to continue a series immediately! There are no cliffhangers and each book is a standalone, but there is a side story of a cold case disappearance that unfolds throughout the books so you definitely want to read them in order for this reason.

Jameson is the second-eldest Bodine sibling, a quiet metal sculptor who mostly keeps to himself and his family. Leah Mae was his childhood best friend who grew up summering in Bootleg Springs with her father, until the disappearance of Callie Kendall scares Leah Mae’s mother into keeping her home during the summers after that. Leah grows up to pursue her dream of modeling and acting, and finds herself on a reality show in order to boost her career.

Leah and her fiance/agent are in Bootleg Springs visiting Leah’s father when his health condition makes her decide to stay longer. As she and Jameson rebuild their friendship, scandal on both of their sides tries to keep them apart.

I am loving this series. Each of the Bodines has something unique to contribute to the family and yet they love each other fiercely. And the townspeople are amazing. These books make me laugh out loud frequently. This book is slightly angstier than the previous one – hello tortured artist type – but not overly so.

This is also a no-cheating book, despite Leah Mae having a fiance in the beginning.

My Blue by Emery Jacobs Review + Giveaway

Title: My Blue
Author: Emery Jacobs
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: July 18, 2019

For most of my life, Ella Blue had been by my side. My best friend. My
whole world. Then she vanished. Without a trace. I didn’t know how to move on
without her, but I knew in my heart I’d never let her go—I’d wait for her
Ella Blue
For me, no time has passed. I have no clue what happened to the last
eight years of my life.
I have no memories of a life without Leo. He’s always been my one
constant. And now I’m stuck in the past, trying to figure out if we can find
our way back to each other.
How can I move forward when I don’t know what I’m leaving behind?
Ella and Leo must rediscover their love—a once-in-a-lifetime love…for the
second time.

My review:

Ella Blue and Leo are high school sweethearts who have grown up together and have loved each other basically their entire lives. On the night of Ella Blue’s 17th birthday, she and Leo are celebrating together when he is arrested without cause. She appeals to her father, who sends Ella Blue to an all-girls boarding school in Florida and threatens Leo if she ever contacts him again.

Eight years later, she is in a band and has a concert in her old hometown. Leo is shocked to see Ella Blue on stage, but she leaves before he can get to her. She disappears and turns up two days later disoriented and with amnesia. Her last memory is her 17th birthday with Leo eight years ago. Together they try to work out what happened to her and piece together not only that night but the previous eight years of her life.

This book was pretty good, but I had mixed feelings reading it. In the beginning, since Ella’s first instinct is to go to her father for help, we assume they have a good relationship. However we’re blindsided by the cold tyrant he really is. There is no backstory of her family life at all.  The main story of the book is perfectly frustrating, in that it’s not easy to figure out what happened to Ella Blue the night of the concert. However, at 85% in we still don’t know and I was starting to think this was a duet and I had missed that information. The story gets wrapped up fairly quickly, though, and there is still room for an epilogue in that last 15% of the book. We still have the unanswered question of what happened initially in Ella Blue’s relationship with her parents to go from loving and happy to the tyrant and the puppet against their daughter.

Overall, a good story but the ending seems rushed.

Cosy Felton is great at her
job—she knows just how to handle the awkwardness that comes with working at an adult toy
store. So when the hottest guy she’s ever seen walks into the shop looking completely
overwhelmed, she’s more than happy to turn on the charm and help him purchase all of the
items on his list.

Griffin Mills is using his business
trip in Las Vegas as a chance to escape the broken pieces of his life in New York City. The last
thing he wants is to be put in charge of buying gag gifts for his friend’s bachelor party. Despite
being totally out of his element, and mortified by the whole experience, Griffin is pleasantly
surprised when he finds himself attracted to the sales girl that helped him.

As skeptical as Cosy may be of
Griffin’s motivations, there’s something about him that intrigues her. But sometimes what
happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas and when real life gets in the way, all bets are
off. Filled with hilariously awkward situations and enough sexual chemistry to power Sin City,
Making Up is the next standalone in the Shacking Up world.

We’re a couple of minutes away from my apartment, which also
means we’re almost at the end of our date. End-of-date protocol often means a goodnight

And I’ve eaten onions. Lots of them. What the hell was I
thinking? I feel around in my shorts pocket, hoping I have a random stick of gum. I find a tiny
square packet and pull it out, along with an old tissue. I shove that back in my pocket and sigh
with relief as I carefully open the Listerine Pocketpak. There’s one strip left. I pop it in my mouth,
wishing I had water since my mouth is dry and I’m suddenly super nervous.

Griffin pulls up in front of my apartment building. I swallow a
bunch of times, trying to get the strip to dissolve on my tongue and glance out the tinted
window, seeing it from his perspective. I don’t live in a bad part of town, but I sure as hell
wouldn’t leave this car sitting out here for any length of time unless I wanted it keyed or stripped

Griffin shifts into park and turns to me, one hand resting on the
back of my seat near the headrest. “I had a great time, Cosy.”

“Me too, thanks for dinner.” I tried to fork over my share, but he
was quick on the credit card draw.

“It was my pleasure.” He leans in the tiniest bit, a nonverbal cue
that he’s going in for a kiss.

I mirror the movement, giving him the go ahead. My stomach
flutters in anticipation. I exhale slowly through my nose. Even though the Listerine strip should
be doing its job to mask the onions, I don’t want to ruin the moment by breathing that in his

His fingertips skim my jaw, and I close my eyes. And then his
lips brush my cheek. I wait for them to move a couple of inches to the right, but after what feels
like a lot of seconds—and is probably only a few—I crack a lid.

Griffin is still close, a wry smile on his lips and a smolder in his

“Seriously, that’s it? A kiss on the cheek?”
His smile widens, making his eyes crinkle at the corners. He’s
nothing like the guys I usually end up on dates with. College boys don’t take things slow. If I
were out with one of the guys from school, I’d be sitting in a beat-up Civic with some stupid
music playing, and he’d be all over me with his tongue halfway down my throat, copping a

“I thought all the onions you ate were the equivalent to garlic for
vampires.” Griffin fingers my hair near my shoulder. I’d really like him to finger something else.
Wait. I mean I’d like to feel his hands on me. Not in my pants. Okay, maybe I’d like them in my
pants, but not after date number one.

“I wasn’t thinking, and I really like onions. A lot. In hindsight, it’s
not a great date food. I feel kinda dumb. And I guess at first I wasn’t so sure about you. How
was I supposed to know you’d actually be kind of normalish?”

“Well, you drink club soda on purpose, so you can’t be all
there.” I tap his temple.

Griffin circles my wrist with his fingers and drops his head, lips
brushing over my knuckle. “We can’t all be perfect, now, can we?”

“I suppose not, and perfect is boring.”
“That it is.” He hums against my skin, and I feel it through my
entire body. “I would like to try that kiss again, if you’re still interested.”

Carpool by Noelle Adams

Title: Carpool

Series: Milford College #1

Author: Noelle Adams
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: July 17, 2019

The last thing I want is to share a forty-five minute commute with the most obnoxious (and attractive) man I know. But I can’t afford a new transmission right now, so I’m stuck with Marcus for at least a month.
He promises to be good, but Marcus Greene is never good. And I’m not sure how long I can resist him.
Carpool is the first book in the Milford College series, novellas about the faculty and staff of a small liberal arts college.

My review:

This was a fun, quick read. It’s a single POV story, told from Jennifer’s perspective. Jennifer’s transmission is broken, and since all of her extra money goes to her grandmother’s nursing home, she can’t afford to have it fixed so the mechanic is working on it in his spare time. She lives in her small hometown, though, 45 minutes from the college where she works. Marcus also lives in the town and works at the same college so it makes sense for them to carpool.

I did like how the long commutes forced them to really talk and get to know each other. They may have grown up together, but they didn’t really know each other well. Marcus was so supportive of her, too, especially with her grandmother.  There were a couple things I didn’t love, though. First, Jennifer’s name isn’t given until 18% into the book. I have no problem with first person point of view, but I’d like to know who that person is. We also didn’t get Marcus’s side of anything. But the biggest negative to me is what did Marcus do when he was growing up that was so bad?? We know she was warned to keep away from him her whole life. The town gossips like crazy. He has a bad boy reputation, yet he has a director position at the college and helps his dad on the farm when he isn’t working. Beyond the usual teenage crap, how is he supposedly such a bad boy?

Overall, this was an enjoyable book.

I nod and open the passenger door, reaching down to grab the strap of my purse.
I blink when he gets out too.
“What are you doing?” I ask, my voice sharp because I’m confused.
“I’m walking you to the door. Do you have a problem with that?”
“But why?”
“Why not?”
I don’t have an answer to the question. And since he didn’t give me an answer, I feel
like I don’t have to give one to him either.
But I’m shuddering with something like excitement as we reach the front stoop of my grandmother’s house. I stop and stare up at him. He’s gazing down at me with that same deep, warm expression I saw in him earlier.
Right before he kissed me.
“Why are you doing this, Marcus?” My voice breaks slightly because I’m pulsing with
everything I’m feeling.
“I’m just standing at your door.”
“You know what I’m talking about.”
He nods, his mouth relaxing slightly. “I’m doing it because I want to kiss you again, and I think you want that too.”
I lick my lips. He sees it. His expression heats up.
It thrills me so much I quickly get my tongue back into my mouth and swallow hard. “I
don’t know, Marcus. I don’t usually do things… just for fun.”
“I know you don’t. But I keep telling you that you’re allowed. Kissing me would be fun for you. And for me. It doesn’t have to mean anything more. It doesn’t have to
change anything important about your world. So why shouldn’t we do it again?”
“Because… because I think it would… If we do it again, we’re going to do more than kiss.”
He chuckles softly and reaches up to brush some hair back from my face. “Yes. We probably will.”
“And you think that can be just for fun? No… no… pressure or complications?” I can’t
believe I’m even considering no-strings-attached sex, but that’s exactly what I’m doing.
That’s what Marcus is offering.
And I want it so much.
“Yes. I think so. If that’s what you want.”
“That’s all it could be between us. For obvious reasons.”
He gives a slight nod. “Yes.”
This confirms a tiny, lingering question I’d never even acknowledged. And it makes
things so much safer.
Safe enough for me to let myself be tempted for real. After all, sex with Marcus is going to be good. I know it for sure. And if I can enjoy it—have some fun—in a way that both of us agree will lead to nothing disruptive to my life, why the hell shouldn’t I?
Why can’t I be like everyone else and just let go now and then?
It doesn’t have to threaten the security of my world.
I really think I could let go with Marcus and still be safe.
He confirms this by saying in a more serious tone, “I’m here for anything you want,
Jennifer. Anything. Just name it. But if it’s not what you want, all you have to do is tell me, and I’ll never make a move on you again.”
I gulp. “I… do want it.”
“Yeah?” He tilts his head down.
“So you want to try to have a little fun and see what happens?”
Somehow I’ve made up my mind. I’ve decided. Everything inside me wants to do this, so I’m going to do it after all. “Yeah. That’s what I want.”
His eyes smolder in a way that makes my heart clench.
And other parts of me clench as well.
“So I can kiss you again?”
I nod. “Please do.”
