“What do you mean you aren’t going to make the flight?”

The man across the narrow aisle of the plane stared wide-eyed at my raised voice even as the woman next to him chattered away. I pressed the phone to my ear and angled away from him as Roxy continued to make excuses.

“Mr. Bubbles escaped. I’d think you’d be more concerned.” Seriously? Roxy was giving me a guilt trip?

“That cat only moves to eat, so don’t tell me that the lazy thing actually ventured out of your house.” I gripped the phone so tightly in my hand, pain shot through my joints.

“Also, somebody pulled the fire alarm at the library.” Considering it was eight in the morning on a Sunday and we didn’t open the library until one, I highly doubted it.

“This isn’t fifty excuses to give your best friend for leaving her alone on your honeymoon.” The lady in front of me whipped around and flashed a scathing look. I smiled apologetically and lowered my voice. “If you aren’t on this plane by the time it takes off—”

“Ladies and gentlemen, please fasten your seatbelts. Flight crew, secure the door.”

“As soon as I can get another flight, I’ll be right behind you,” Roxy promised.

“I can’t believe you overslept.” She was perpetually late to everything. Why I was surprised she missed the flight, especially after what went down at her wedding yesterday, I didn’t know.

“Um…well…actually, I didn’t.”

“Don’t throw Mr. Bubbles under the bus again.”

“Fine. I was up all night doing unspeakable things to Marco,” she said in a rush.

“The best man?!” I squeaked.

“Miss, please put away your phone,” a passing flight attendant said in a polite but don’t-cross-me kind of way.

I nodded and gave her a tight smile. As soon as she moved on, I pinned the phone to my face as Roxy tried to explain herself.

“I got left at the altar. I deserved to have some fun.”

My review:

This book is so much more than I expected.

Lotus is a child of New Orleans working in high fashion in New York City. The design house is creating a new type of wearable technology and wants NBA player Kenan to be the spokesperson. Kenan and Lotus have met before, since her cousin Iris is married to his teammate August.  She knows she is attracted to him, but is taking time away from men to work on herself and deal with parts of her past she’s tried to bury her whole life. Kenan is freshly out of a nasty divorce where he was betrayed on many levels by his ex-wife, the media, and people he thought were friends. He wants to protect his heart, and his daughter, by not jumping into a relationship. They decide to be friends, but true love cannot be stopped.

So much happens in this book. There is humor and joy and love and friendship, but also deep, emotional pain and tragedy. Ultimately there is also healing. There is a beautiful blending of beliefs. There is power. When Lotus was a child, she and Mimi had a conversation about the powerful thunderstorm that had Lotus captivated. When Mimi commented that most people are afraid of storms and Lotus stated that she was not, Mimi replied simply “Of course not, you are the storm.” That is perfectly Lotus. She may be tiny but she is strong and powerful and mighty. She has generations of fire in her veins and lightning in her eyes.

I feel like I could go on about this book for pages and pages, yet at the same time I don’t want to tell anything because I don’t want to give anything away. This book is an experience, though. And definitely one worth reading.

My review:

Wow.

Despite what it seems from the blurb and cover, this is not a light, fun read full of flirty banter and enemies-to-lovers goodness. Don’t get me wrong, because there is definitely plenty of that, especially in the beginning, but it has SO MUCH MORE. Chloe and Kyle both grew up in their small town; Kyle is the son of the mayor and Chloe is the daughter of a neglectful drug-addicted mother who grew up in a trailer park on the outskirts of town. We know early on that something happened between them in high school that has led to Chloe hating Kyle with everything she has, and hating the attraction she feels toward him.

But like I said, there is so much more. Chloe’s childhood was heartbreaking. Her mother and sister were terrible people, and her sister is still the cause of most of Chloe’s stress. She followed in their mother’s footsteps and is addicted to drugs and alcohol and horrible relationships, and neglecting her two children, teenage Trey and 4 year old Gloria. Their family has secrets, and when they come to light the whole town feels the repercussions. Then when tragedy strikes, the people affected by the secrets are able to help each other heal.

I fully expected this to be a humorous rom-com, but this book made me cry. Really cry, not just tear up a little. The humor is there, but the pure heartbreak just killed me. Thank goodness we did get our happily ever after to make it a little better but this book will be in my head for a very long time.

My review:

This was an entertaining book. Quincy is a former MI6 agent working for the  newly formed Stark Security Agency, going undercover, along with his partner Denise, at a party trying to get information to stop a sex trafficking ring and save a 13 year old princess who was kidnapped and being sold. He unexpectedly sees Eliza at the party, thinking she is so desperate for money she is working as a call girl although she is also undercover trying to find her missing sister. Almost five years previously he and Eliza had a relationship while she was living in London, but the job took him away from her, leaving them both heartbroken and her angry. Unfortunately, they must work together to find her sister and the princess.

There is a lot of action and excitement in this book, along with the romance. The main story is the missing princess and sister. There are some intense scenes, too. When we find out what happened to Quincy on the mission that took him away from Eliza in London… wow. And the villain reveal and fight at the end was insane. Even better, I was actually surprised by who the villain actually was! I had predicted it would be a different person. And once Eliza and Quincy talk out what happened when their relationship ended, they are able to come to terms with their feelings and move forward in a healthy way.

This is a great book, but not a light easy read by any means. And the ending sets up the next book well, too. I am excited to read Denise’s story after getting to know her in this book.

My review:

Holy mother of cliffhangers! I kept tapping my Kindle, not able to figure out why the page wasn’t turning and finally realized it was the end. Noooooo!
The entire book was totally worth it, though. I just hope book 3 is finished quickly!
We’ve followed Clara and Alexander from the beginning, when they were dating to engaged to a new family who rise to King and Queen much more suddenly than expected. Now with this new series, we get to see them more comfortable in their new roles and yet still coming to terms being a married couple with kids along with ruling England.
I have always loved Clara but she has really come into her own in this book. She is livid, understandably, at this last secret X has been keeping from her and she makes him work for every scrap of forgiveness she may give. And it’s about time. Alexander is still working on the fact that while the weight of the country may rest on his shoulders, he has an equal partner to share ALL his burdens and keeping secrets to “protect” her always backfires. Clara is not a weak woman who needs protecting from truths.
The addition of the family member who was not actually dead adds so much to their story! It was a rocky reentry for sure but at the end things were looking up for her and her place in the family.
Well done, Ms Lee. I can’t wait to read the next installment.

My review:

First: Cliffhanger warning! This is book one of a two-part duet; this one is from Rachel’s point of view and part 2 is from Lennox’s point of view.
Rachel is a single mother who has moved in with her parents to save money as she rebuilds her life and business after divorce. On her daughter Ariana’s first day at a new private school, she makes friends with another girl in her class and they accidentally clog the classroom bathroom’s toilet and cause a flood resulting in a visit to the principal’s office. Rachel is surprised to see the father of the friend is Lennox Reign, former teen heartthrob and object of Rachel’s teenage crush. Despite their daughters becoming best friends, Rachel and Lennox can’t seem to get along. When they are paired together to head the school’s bake sale fundraiser, though, things start to change between them. Until a misunderstanding goes viral and changes everything.
I did enjoy this book, even though there was no resolution and a new plot twist was introduced on the last page. I know the second book is coming soon so I can be patient. Maybe.
Rachel is a great character. She’s sassy and independent and a fantastic mother. Her ex-husband was horrible but when she finally stands up to him I was cheering her on. Lennox helped her to see how the ex was treating her and that was an invaluable lesson no matter the outcome of their relationship. The girls are adorable third graders. I was also pleasantly surprised by Amy’s character. I was anticipating her to be a “Mean Girls mommy” but she ended up completely opposite of that and a good friend to Rachel.
I can’t wait to read the conclusion to this story. If part 2 is as good as part 1 we will not be disappointed.

“Well, accidents happen, Mr. Reign. You weren’t the only one
called out of work, and I’m sure the girls both learned their lesson.” I forced
a smile, hoping he’d drop the hard-ass look.
No such luck.
I glanced at the principal out of the corner of my eye, hoping she’d have something to say. But before she could even open her mouth, the guy spoke again.
“Yes, we can hope this doesn’t happen again. Make sure your daughter knows that.”
I whipped my head around. “Excuse me? You think my daughter, out of the blue, on her first day, decided ‘Hey, let’s try and unclog a toilet and flood the bathroom!’” 
He smirked, the only crack in his exterior. “Never happened before with my daughter and she’s been going here since preschool.”
This guy had some nerve.
“Yeah, well, people change. Not everyone can solve kids’ problems in twenty minutes with a laugh track.” The words flew out of my lips before I could take them back.
I really needed to learn how to use a filter.
“You really just used a sitcom line?” He raised an eyebrow.
“Well, you are Lennox Reign, aren’t you? Former poster boy, even with your own milk mustache campaign? I’m sure you raised enough hell as a teen star,” I spat.
He shook his head, blowing a breath of air out of his nose as he muttered, “Un-fucking-believable.”
Finally, the principal walked around her desk, putting her hands out. “Okay, I think that’s enough. Both of your daughters have been given a warning, and we will make sure this doesn’t happen again. Okay? No need for language.”
“You’re right, Ambro. Sorry for getting out of hand,” Lennox said, offering her a smile but not even glancing in my direction.
Ass.

My review:

Zoe is a reporter in Washington DC who runs a story on abuse and neglect at a girls’ detention center. When her source recants and is discredited, she is fired. The same day, a tragedy sends her home to Langley Park to help her family. When she learns of similar allegations at the nearby facility owned by the same company, she takes the opportunity to make up for the past and save the girls.

I liked that there was so much more to this book than the main romance (which seems to have played a secondary role in my reading experience).  Zoe is smart and fearless, and the support her friends show is amazing. The romance part was sweet – Sam is carrying a lot of guilt and feels like he doesn’t deserve to be loved and be happy, but Zoe is able to break through that and help him heal. One thing that bugged me, though – they are in a smallish town. How is it that literally no one knew what happened to Kara?

This was a really good read. It’s a standalone in a series, and while the others are not necessary to enjoy this one, it’s nice to “catch up” with past characters. This book follows The Measure of Home, reviewed here.
