Return of the Prince by Nana Malone

Title: Return of the Prince
Series: The Royal Elite Prince Duet #1

Author: Nana Malone

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: April 30, 2019

Blurb
I’ve been a prince in exile, but I’m finally going home, tarnished crown and all. This time, I won’t let anyone keep me away… Not Ariel, the woman I left behind. Not the killer on my tail. Hell, not even my cousin—the king—can stop me.

Unlike my conniving brother, I have no designs on the throne. Let better men rule.

But I do have a score to settle.

Everything was going just fine until Ariel is assigned to my protection detail. Little Miss Hates My Ass will ruin everything.

One look at her and I know it’s not over between us. All I have to do is convince her I never forgot her…and not get dead in the process.

My review:

If you’ve read any of Ms Malone’s other books in the Winston Isles world, you know that Ariel has a secret romantic past with exiled Prince Tristan. We have almost no details, however. If you haven’t read the other books, don’t worry – this duet is mostly a standalone from the others. (“Mostly” because there are a lot of references to events that happened in past books but they are conversational between characters, not relevant to the current story.)

Prince Tristan is in Barcelona, Spain, playing professional soccer and secretly plotting a return to his home. Someone is trying to kill him, however. He and his actress fiancee Ella think it’s her abusive former manager after her but when the attempts happen when they are not together, and then still at home on the island, it’s evident he is the target. His cousin King Sebastian increases the Royal Guard protection on Tristan, including the Knights led by Ariel. Their unresolved past and feelings that have held on for ten years get in the way, but Ariel resolves to stay away from Tristan as much as possible since he is engaged.

Being book one in a duet, this is half the story. However, I was happy to find that this one doesn’t end on quite the dramatic cliffhanger as the previous two Nana Malone duets I’ve read. I enjoyed meeting Prince Tristan, and loved getting to know Ariel better. She’s been a big figure in the other books but we haven’t gotten to know much about her personally before. I did like catching up with the other guards from past books, too. This is definitely an entertaining read.

Author Bio
USA Today Bestselling Author, NANA MALONE’s love of all things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense she borrowed from her cousin on a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana at a precocious thirteen. She’s been in love with kick butt heroines ever since. With her overactive imagination, and channeling her inner Buffy, it was only a matter a time before she started creating her own character s. Waiting for her chance at a job as a ninja assassin, Nana, meantimeworks out her drama, passion and sass with fictional characters every bit as sassy and kick butt as she thinks she is.

The books in her series have been on multiple Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble best seller lists as well as the iTunes Breakout Books list and most notably the USA Today Bestseller list.

Until that ninja job comes through, you’ll find Nana working hard on additional books for her series as well as other fun, sassy romances for characters that won’t leave her alone. Emmy

My bad reputation is coming back to haunt me. Now, I need a date for my brother’s wedding just to keep the vultures at bay. I’ve noticed Jake around the building and he’s the perfect man for the job.

The thing is, I don’t actually have what I promised in return for his help, but I don’t want this to end.

Jake

I’ve seen Emmy and she’s out of my league, but that doesn’t stop me from taking her up on her offer and upping the ante. I have rules, however, the more time we spend together the more the lines get blurred.

Her lie made her more like me than I ever thought possible. Too bad liars don’t do it for me.

A little boyfriend maintenance goes a long way…

After all, 425 Madison Avenue is the perfect place to fall in love.

*Each story is completely standalone.

My review:

Another fantastic book in the 425 Madison series! Like the other books, this is a standalone set in the same apartment building in Manhattan. Emmy and Becca are roommate best friends who live in the building and Jake is one of the maintenance men. He is saving up to fulfill his dream of buying a house. Emmy needs a fake boyfriend to get her evil stepmother and creeper ex off her back at the events leading up to her brother’s wedding. She offers to pay Jake to accompany her on 4 dates, three events and then the wedding itself. As they spend time together, they learn they have a lot more in common than they expected, and real feelings develop.
I liked both Emmy and Jake a lot. Both are relatively secure in their choices. Emmy is living the life she wants on her own terms. Jake stumbled into a career he really enjoys, except for the handsy old ladies. Emmy is a shameless “Digibot Go” player and skee-ball fanatic. Jake loves his family and hangs out with his brother regularly watching their beloved sports teams. Their chemistry together is off the charts. The supporting characters add a lot to the story, too. Becca, Emmy’s roommate, and both Jake and Emmy’s brothers all help propel Emmy and Jake to each other. I was happy to see how Emmy and Levi’s relationship improved as well.
This was a fun, entertaining read with complex, likable characters.

Copyright @ 2019 Lauren Helms

“Oh, well … hello there, hot stuff.” Mrs. Jenkins stands in the open doorway of her apartment.

Her arm slides up the door frame slightly awkwardly as she leans into the frame. She’s attempting to look sexy in a Japanese silk kimono robe. It’s a red floral print that hangs nearly to her ankles. She has surprisingly good posture for a seventy-year-old woman.

Her husky voice is seductive as she gestures for me to come in. I have to mentally prepare myself every time I have a work order for unit 2007. Which is normally once a week.

Mrs. Jenkins is a retired Broadway actress. She hit her stride when she starred in the hit musical Chicago in the mid-seventies. Dorthy Jenkins is a dramatic, wealthy retiree who just happens to hit on me every time I’m here. She may be a tad lonely, so I deal with it.

“Good afternoon, Mrs. Jenkins. My work order says that you’ve got faulty smoke detectors.” Honestly, that seems a bit suspicious since we worked through the entire building updating the detectors less than six months ago.

“Dorthy, darling. Please, stop calling me Mrs. Jenkins. You make me feel like a cougar.”

I raise my eyebrow at that. More like a puma since she’s got to be at least forty years older than me. I set down my toolbox and scan the living room for the unit’s central detector.

“All right, Dorthy. You’re having issues with the smoke detectors? Let’s just take a look. I’ll get these fixed up in no time.” Really, I just want to get out of here. The longer I’m in this apartment, the more cheek pinches I get. And I’m not just talking about pinches to my face. She gets a little bolder with each visit. Not looking forward to the day she takes it too far. Her flirting seems harmless though. She just really appreciates those “hot young thangs.” Her words, not mine.

“Well, no rush. I’ll just pour us a little nightcap.” I don’t mention it’s only four in the afternoon. “Will two fingers do, Jake? I’ve always preferred two.” She waggles her eyebrows.

I divert my eyes. The sexual reference catches me off guard and I feel my face heat.

Clearing my throat, I shake my head. “I’m sorry, Dorthy, but no drinking on the job.” I pull out my step ladder so I can reach the smoke detector.

“You’re such a good boy, darling. I admire that. I’ll just have a nip and enjoy the show.”

Just like she normally does. Unfortunately, she isn’t the only 425 Madison resident to watch me while I do my job. I’ve worked in this building for nearly three years now. Growing up, I never had dreams of becoming a maintenance man, but I’ve always been good with my hands.

Genre: Contemporary/Small Town Romance
Release Date: April 30, 2019
Cover Design: Cover by Noelle Raffaele
There’s a baby boom in the small town of Bluff’s Cove!
At least that’s how it feels to CeCe. All of her friends are pregnant, but try as they might, she and her husband Carl have had no success. So CeCe agrees to one round of a dangerous fertility treatment in the hope that they’d have a precious child of their own at the end of the grueling regimen of hormone shots and crazy mood swings.
Then one day, during her regular shift as an ER nurse, a remarkable thing happens. Now CeCe will need to convince Carl to alter his preconceived notion of what constitutes a family. Can he let go of his stubborn pride long enough to grant her this one true wish? Will he open his heart to accept the smallest gift she has to offer?

In September, Book Four of The Gypsy Moth Chronicles, CeCe and Carl’s world is turned upside down. Can their love for each other survive the ultimate test?
blog_review
This was a good book. I hadn’t read any of the previous ones, but didn’t feel like I was missing anything. This is a true standalone. ER nurse Cece has PCOS and is unable to have children easily, so she and her husband Carl have decided to try one round of fertility treatments before exploring other options. During one of Cece’s shifts a teenager hands Cece a newborn, following the Safe Haven law. Cece falls in love with the infant and talks to Carl about fostering to adopt him. All is going well until the baby’s biological grandmother shows up at their front door. Cece and Carl face the fight of their lives to keep and adopt baby Ethan.

Cece and Carl have an amazing relationship. I love how they love and support each other. And Cece and Ruby’s friendship is beautiful. This book was high on emotion, but not over the top drama. It was just right.

Carl came around to where she stood, “I’d love a kiss from my wife.”
“Just a kiss?” she asked with a smile, tucking the cake into the pink cardboard container. She turned into his embrace.
“Well, maybe more than one kiss,” he replied, twisting his fingers through the belt loops of her jeans so that she knew he meant business.
She was all too happy to comply. She tilted her head back and met his lips eagerly. Carl moved his hands onto her back, drawing her in even closer. He raised her shirt up over her head, undid the clasp of her bra in one practiced motion, and removed both articles of clothing before she even realized what he intended. He grabbed her hips and picked her up, placing her on top of her newly cleaned countertop.
“Too much to move this into the bedroom?” she murmured.
“Not sure yet. You tell me,” he replied as he undid the top button of her pants and then slid the zipper down, lifting her gently to pull them off one leg at a time, leaving her sitting on the cold granite in just a lacy scrap of panty.
CeCe felt herself being swept up by his passion. She knew that she needed to talk seriously with him about the baby — he needed to know — but decided that she could wait. Sensation stirred strongly in the pit of her stomach, and she knew exactly what he meant to do next.
“The bedroom, Carl. Please. . .”

Lily and the Billionaire by Beth Michele Review + Giveaway

Title: Lily and the Billionaire
Author: Beth Michele
Genre: Contemporary Romance/Romantic Comedy
Release Date: April 29, 2019
Blurb
What do you get when you cross one feisty secretary with one determined billionaire?
My name—Jace Harlow.
My business—making billions.
I’ve got it all.
Money.

Confidence.

Sexual prowess.

I know—I’m quite a catch. At least to most women. But Lily Conrad isn’t like any woman I’ve met before.
Damn her and that red dress.
Now all I think about is her. All I fantasize about is her—her smile, her laugh, her long legs wrapped around my waist.
My dilemma, you ask?
She doesn’t care that I’m a billionaire. And why should she? It means nothing, tells her nothing about who I am.
Lily Conrad doesn’t know what I’m made of, but you can be sure of one thing…She’s going to find out.

My review:

This was a fun book to read. Lily is an executive assistant by day, artist in her free time. She and Jace meet at an art exhibition where he talks about how bad her painting is, not knowing she’s the artist. They make up, and end up dating. They also realize that she works for not only a competing company to his, but to his college nemesis. They have an enjoyable relationship, though. She isn’t impressed by his financial status and hates being bought things since that is how her parents handled their neglect of her. Instead, Jace is forced to date her as a ‘normal’ guy and is surprised to find that he likes the various little things he’s missed out on: subway rides, hot dog and peanut vendors, walking around the city.

I liked Jace’s relationship with his brother Chaz. I adored Lily’s relationship with Georgia’s little brother Rowan, too. I can’t really think of anything I didn’t like. This book was a fun, light read with great characters and a happily ever after.

A light sound takes me out of my own head. I look to my left, and what I see robs me of my breath. I stand taller, suddenly unable to remember my own thoughts. A profile of porcelain skin, a sharp nose, and—Jesus—a full red lip claim my attention. Hair the color of amber piled high on her head, soft tendrils frame her face. I want to let it down, comb my fingers through it, see if it’s as soft as it looks…and I keep looking, because it’s impossible not to. The smooth lines of her nape are set in grace, my tongue already mapping the perfect path down her skin. My eyes keep going because there’s no stopping them now. Moving lower to the dress, the color is a deep red, the neckline plunging. Being six foot one has its advantages. Even from the side, I can see the dip of cleavage. I lick my lips, already begging for a taste, wanting to know if she’s as sweet as she looks. Then I continue on, because wild horses couldn’t drag me away. I need to see more.
Unfortunately, as far as skin goes, the rest is covered by the floor-length gown. Whoever she is, she’s stunning, and I can’t stop staring. She has pleasure and sin written all over her. I’m hard now. My body ready to do what is instinctual to me.
For the first time in…well, forever, I want to be reckless. I want to throw her over my shoulder and drag her to the nearest closet. Sift through all that red, lush fabric and
find her pussy. Put my mouth there, sweep my tongue across her clit. Drag an
orgasm out of her that makes her see stars, makes her see no one but me. I laugh under my breath because that would be a first.
As if she knows what I’m thinking, she turns my way, and I’m knocked on my ass. My first thought: I want to get down on my hands and knees and thank God for this gift from heaven. Jesus. If I thought she was gorgeous from the side, head-on, she’s exquisite. Her eyes are a moss green. No, no—that description will not do. Because that doesn’t begin to describe soft sage peppered with golden yellow flecks. They’re clear and…wait, vulnerable? Or…I don’t know, apprehensive? How can a creature so beautiful be so scared? The million-dollar question—or in my case, the billionaire-dollar question.
When I realize I’ve been staring too long, I force a word from my lips. Any word will do at this point. “Hello.”
Just brilliant, Jace.
“Hello,” she says back, almost reluctantly. “Can I help you with something?”
“Pardon me?”
She gestures with one hand, long fingernails painted red to match her dress. Red: it’s a bold color, feisty—daring, even. I wonder if she’s adventurous behind closed doors, if she likes to fuck on desks, up against walls. I wonder if she enjoys taking it in what I’m sure is a perfectly curved ass. I sure as hell want to find out. I’d relish the opportunity to have her mile-long legs wrapped around my waist, grinding on my cock.
“You were staring at me.”
And thinking salacious thoughts, but I won’t mention that.
“I was?” It comes out like a question when there is absolutely no doubt it’s the truth.
The corner of her mouth turns up, but it doesn’t match her eyes. What is that I see? I want to figure it out, and then I want to take it away for her.
“Did you have a question?”
“A question?” Did I even ask a question? Why is my brain not computing? I never waver, but this woman is throwing me off my game. Maybe she can read my thoughts. Perhaps she knows the question inquiring minds want to know: How does she like to fuck? I’ve been silent too long, imagining all the different ways I could bring her to orgasm, and now it looks like she’s holding back a laugh. I want to hear what her laugh sounds like. Is it high and melodic or low and raspy?
“Yes. Did you have one?”
I can feel the crease slash my forehead. “I’m…”
An idiot. Confused.
Tongue-tied by your beauty.
Yeah, that’ll do.
Her eyebrows lift. “You’re…”
I clear my throat and step into my confidence once again. Then I edge closer, the scent of something floral floating under my nose. “Tongue-tied by your beauty.”
She actually laughs, and here I thought I was smoother than that. But hey, I made her laugh, so point for me.

Excerpt:

What would it be like to have her that way? Skin to skin? Breathless and begging? My body inside hers?

I want answers, I think as I open the door to our building.

No, I need them.

I take the elevator up to our floor and go right to her apartment. Using the key she gave me, I unlock her door, smiling that she still hasn’t changed the lock, and head inside.

“Reid?” She jumps off the couch and I freeze.

Jesus, she’s fucking beautiful. I’ve seen her a million times like this, but I don’t know what it is—I can’t breathe.

Her hair is piled up on top of her head in some sort of nest, the glasses that she swears she doesn’t need are on, and her legs … God, her legs. Long, sweet, slender … they would look perfect around my neck.

“What are you doing here? If this is about …” She stops talking and looks at me, her eyes full of confusion as I watch her chest rise and fall.

I walk toward her, unable to stand still. My hands grip her cheeks, and I pull her mouth to mine. Her gasp is swallowed by the searing kiss. Her fingers wrap around my wrists and I don’t know if she’s trying to stop me, but I’m going to keep going until she does.

Yet she never does. Instead of pushing me away, her hands move to my hips.

Willow kisses me back.

She kisses me like this is the only option.

She kisses me harder and more passionately than the last time.

She gives as much as she takes and I fucking revel in it.

This is crazy, but I don’t care. It’s right. It’s everything that finally makes sense. I wondered what it would be like and now I know—it’s fucking perfect.

“Reid.” She says my name and then pulls my mouth back to hers.

I kiss her, loving how our mouths fit and the way her tongue feels against mine.

“Tell me to stop.” I give her an out that I pray she won’t take.

“What?”

“Tell me now, Wills.”

I’m desperate for her. Seeing her tonight, knowing she was spying on me, did something to my heart that I can’t explain. It was the answer to the question that neither of us was willing to face.

There’s something here.

Maybe it’s new. Maybe it’s always been there but we didn’t see it. Maybe Willow and I needed to be pushed. Whatever the reason, the outcome is this.

She touches my face. Her fingertips are soft, and she moves her thumb to my lip. “I can’t. I don’t know what’s happening, but I don’t want it to stop.”

“Good, because I don’t think I could.”

My mouth is back to hers the second the words are out.

She giggles against my lips and I drink it in. Everything about Willow is sweet. Her mouth, her laughter, her heart. They all make her irresistible. I don’t know how I never saw it.

I break the kiss and scoop her into my arms, bringing her back to the bedroom. She doesn’t say anything, and I’m glad for it.

We’re both always in our heads and I’m very much ready to be in her instead.

I lay her down and crawl over her, loving how she looks at me with lust-filled eyes. “Tell me what you want, Wills.” She shakes her head and I know what she’s doing, but I’m not having it. “Don’t think, baby, just tell me.”

Her lids fall, closing me off to what she doesn’t want me to see, and I take a beat to really look at her. Lips swollen, shirt falling off her shoulder, hair fanning out on the bed. She looks like an angel.

“I want you to kiss me,” she whispers.

His Little Wife Lie by Sloan Storm + Giveaway

Title: His Little Wife Lie

Author: Sloan Storm

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: April 26, 2019

Blurb
IT’S NOT A LIE IF WE BELIEVE IT’S TRUE.
That’s what Griff Foster said right after he asked me to be his wife.

Sweet, isn’t he?

Let’s be real: his proposal had nothing to do with romance. Falling in love isn’t in his DNA. With piercing blue eyes and a hard body to match, he goes through women like candy.
But he saved my life.
I promised I’d repay him. I should learn when to keep my mouth shut.

Griff needs a Mrs. Right Now, and he’s convinced I’m the perfect actress.

In case I have any doubts, there are seven badly needed zeroes on a check with my name on it to help make up my mind.
Ugh.
We’re totally fake. Nothing but lies.

Except the way his lips feel on mine.

Except the way his touch sets my body ablaze.

Except the way my soul aches when he looks into my eyes.

He says that without me, he loses everything.

But if I’ve got the upper hand, why does it feel like he’s in control?

There’s only one thing missing from this arrangement.

What happens to my heart when it’s over?

My review:

I don’t even know where to begin with this book. There is so much going on here, and not quite in a good way. Griff rescues Lily from an attempted rape by her boss’s nephew, who she had to go on some dates with in order to get a promotion at work. She lives with her single mother, and they are struggling financially. Soon after, Griff learns that he has to marry in a short amount of time in order to retain his inheritance and the company he’s been running for years. His solution? Pay the hot chick from the running trail to marry him after making sure she doesn’t have another job holding her back. Coincidentally, Lily learns that her absentee stepfather forged some loans and left her mother in debt for the same amount Griff will pay Lily. So she agrees.

I liked Lily for about 75% of the book, and Griff for about half I guess. The back and forth between them made my head spin – there was just one or two plot twists too much. They went from fake engaged to practically instalove and engaged for real, then off and on a few more times. Lily would find out about a secret Griff was keeping or something he’d done to get his way, hate him, he’d charm her into forgiveness, rinse and repeat. Lily would go from hating him to proclaiming her love so fast I had whiplash. But it seems she had a prime example – her mother hated her ex husband for so many years for leaving her to pay for his fraud, but once he comes back into the picture and apologizes they’re back together like nothing ever happened. So many things had happened that by the time we got to Tabitha’s origins I just laughed and said “Of COURSE she is,” because that’s just how this book works. My favorite characters in the book were Gretchen, the flight attendant, Jules the nurse, and Terrance, Griff’s… assistant? Butler? His role was never quite defined.

Rating: ♥♥♥ It’s absurd, but it isn’t nonredeemable. And it is entertaining, as long as you seriously suspend your disbelief. Read it as if you’re watching a movie in the vein of The Hangover – all kinds of crazy, out-there shit that you can’t help but laugh at.

That was it!
What kind of fucking game was he trying to play? I made a complete fool out of myself, then he tried to turn it around on me! No one was going to treat me like this, especially not him.
Once in my room, I raced toward the closet, grabbed my bag, and dragged it out. Fuck this place!
Tiny Me chimed in. No, no! Wait! What are you doing? The money!
“I don’t care about the money!” I yelped, clutching my fingers into fists. “Don’t you understand? I care about him!” Oh shit. No. No.
I sensed a presence in the doorway. “What did you say?”
“Stay away from me.” I spun in place, biting my lip and sputtering hate. “I’m leaving. You can’t stop me.”
He didn’t listen. Of course. I mean, why start now?
Marching right toward me, Griff continued, “You said you cared about me. Don’t try
and deny it.”
Yeah, no kidding. You ass. “Of course, I do! Jesus! Do you know how many men I’ve offered my virginity to? Do you? Take a wild guess.”
Griff didn’t respond. What could he say? He already knew the answer.
I poked him in the chest. “Just one. Guess how that went over?”
Griff’s nostrils flared. His eyes narrowed. I was pissing him off. Well. Good! Now he knew how I felt!
“Move,” I snarled, edging past him.
I felt the handle of my suitcase rip free from my hand. By the time I turned to look and
see what happened, he’d swept me up me in his arms, racing for the bed.
No!
“Put me down!” I floated in his embrace until he slammed me with a thump,
pinning me beneath him. Struggle was useless, but I gave it everything I had,
jerking from side-to-side until the instant his lips found mine.
Oh fuck. No! Yes. Yes. Yeeessss…
The passion from his kiss ripped through my body like wildfire, reigniting the embers he left smoldering inside of me with his refusal. Griff’s pelvis pressed into me, the impossible hardness between his legs threatened to reawaken my lust into an inferno until my wits returned.
“Stop!” I gasped, breaking my mouth free. My palms went flat, shoving against his
torso. “Get off of me!”
His gaze gave me the answer. Never. Griff ignored my pleas and gripped harder, making me feel he’d crush me into dust if I uttered another word. Reaching up, I clawed and scratched, digging my nails into the steel of his thick chest. But my rage only stoked him, and he groaned, his mouth invading mine again, filling it with his tongue. My resistance turned to vapor, whisps of hate floating away from me while Griff took what he wanted.
At last, he pulled away. I looked at him, my vision glassy from the struggle, each of us
fighting for a breath.
“We can’t.” I exhaled. “It’s a mistake.”
Wait. That wasn’t no. Was it?
He licked his lips and sank his pelvis deeper, driving it hard between my legs. I stifled
a whimper.
“You’re right,” he hummed, reaching for one of my tits, cupping it in his grasp. Uhhh. My eyes rolled back in my head, his touch had me on the verge of blackout.
“It’s the biggest mistake of all,” he warned. “No turning back. No way out.”
No way out. His words reached into my soul, giving me the answer my brain couldn’t. I don’t want one. Don’t give me one. If you do, I might take it.
Wordless, Griff moved over me, a shadow threatening the last shreds of my chastity. With my legs spread and my innocence at risk, I inched my mouth toward his lips when he whispered his final threat.
“At last.”

Stay With Me, an all-new standalone contemporary romance by USA Today bestselling author K.L. Grayson.

Stay with me.

Three simple words.

One impossible request.

I’ve loved Allie McCallister for as long as I can remember. Her happiness and well-being mean more to me than anything else, which is why when the opportunity of a lifetime presented itself, I had to take it. Three months was such a short amount of time to be apart to provide the financial stability we needed to start our lives.

It wasn’t supposed to catapult my band to stardom, and it sure as hell wasn’t supposed to set off the chain of events that pushed my relationship with Allie to the brink. Our hearts were shattered, our love tested, and when everything fell apart she begged me to leave.

Eight years ago, tragedy broke us. Now we’re back in the same little town where we once dreamed of building our future.

She’s a divorced, single mom.

I’m a damaged country music star.

There are a hundred reasons for us to stay apart.

But all it takes is one look, one touch, one kiss to know our story isn’t over. Now I have to convince her to let me stay.

“Can we talk?” Mason whispers. “Last time Mom said if I talk too much I would scare away the fish, but I get bored if I can’t talk.”

“What do you want to talk about?”

“Stuff.” He shrugs, his chubby hand reeling his line in. He tosses out another cast. It’s perfect for a little guy and when his lure hits the water he tilts his head and looks at me. “Are you Anna’s daddy?”

Crap. I knew this was coming. I take a deep breath and look for Allie because this isn’t the type of conversation I want to have without her. She’s now on the other side of the pond and when she sees me look at her, she waves.

My God, she’s beautiful.

I wave back.

“Are you?” Mason asks again, this time nudging me in the leg.

Looks like I’m on my own for this one. Honesty is always the best policy, right? Even with kids?

“Yeah, I was her daddy.”

He nods and looks at the water while I look at him. Say something, kid. Anything. When he doesn’t, I nudge him back.

“Do you want to talk about it? Do you have questions?”

Mason shrugs. “Maybe.”

“Okay,” I say laughing. “Well, you think about what you want to ask, and I’ll just sit here and wait.”

A few seconds pass before he looks at me. “Why are you Anna’s daddy, but not mine?”

“Well, because you have a different dad.”

“Richard,” he sighs. At that exact moment his line goes taut. “I got something!”

I set my pole down, wrap my arms around him, resting my hands over his, the way a father would with his son. Except Mason isn’t mine and I need to remember that. “Give it a little tug,” I say, flicking our wrists. The fish splashes out of the water and yanks the pole. “Nice and easy. Just like that. You’re doing great.”

I let him go but stay crouched behind him in case he needs help reeling the fish in, but he doesn’t. Allie hoots and hollers, her pole bobbing on her shoulder as she runs toward us. She makes it to our side just as Mason pulls out the tiniest bass I’ve ever seen and pride surges through me. Luckily the hook comes out with ease.

“You did great, buddy. Hold the fish up just like this”—I show him how to hold the fish and he reaches for it like a champ—“and I’ll take a picture of you and your mom.”

Mason holds up the fish, a proud smile on his handsome face and his mama’s arm around his shoulder. They smile for the camera and then Mason turns to Allie.

“Will you take one of me and Jam?”

Allie pulls out her phone while I kneel down. Mason situates himself between my knees and half sits on my leg with the fish dangling from his fingers.

“Say fish sticks!”

Mason and I laugh and repeat Allie. “Fish sticks!”

“Okay, little dude. Let’s toss him back before he dies.”

“We can’t keep him?” he says, walking toward the water.

“Why would you want to keep him?”

“To eat him. Duh.”

My review:

“There isn’t a rewind button in life, but every once in a while, we get a do-over.”

Allie and Jackson were in love since they were kids. As they were getting ready to go to college, Allie is pregnant. At the same time, Jackson is getting an offer to go on a 3 month tour with his band, a deal that could give them enough money to get a good start in life. Everything is going well, until tragedy strikes and they fall apart. Eight years later they are both back in their Idaho hometown, Allie a divorced mom of 5 year old Mason and Jackson a famous country music star who walked away from everything after the death of his best friend and band mate. How can Allie and Jackson move past the tragic event that tore them apart?

This was a really good book. Allie has a five year old son who is her world, but who is constantly let down by his workaholic father. Mason takes a liking to Jackson and the three spend a lot of time together. Allie and Jackson both have to deal with the emotions that drove them apart eight years ago before they can truly recover. On top of the emotional healing they both must do, Mason’s father reenters the picture. I really liked how Jackson and Allie talk things out now and turn to each other. The years apart were what they both needed to grow up and mature. They are also the sweetest couple. The song Jackson wrote for Allie was amazing. And Mason is a total scene stealer! He is an adorable, precocious five year old.

Only One Life by Ashley Farley

42491882

Blurb

A reunion between an estranged mother and daughter opens a world of secrets in a poignant novel by the bestselling author of Magnolia Nights.

Julia Martin grew up wealthy, but it wasn’t until she met her husband, Jack, that she knew true happiness. He made her feel worthy and loved. Their marriage was also an escape from her sister’s bullying, her father’s scrutiny, and her chilly and enigmatic mother. But when tragedy strikes on the night she gives birth, Julia’s happiness is shattered. She has no choice but to return home to her family’s South Carolina mansion, where the grief and guilt buried in her mother’s past await her.

As a young woman trapped in a bitter marriage, Julia’s mother, Iris, once needed her own means of escape. In Lily, she found a best friend. In the flower shop they opened, she discovered independence. Then came a transgression—unforgivable, unforgettable, and unresolved—that changed Iris’s life forever.

Now, in Iris’s most desperate hour, her only hope is to regain the trust of the daughter she loves—and to share the secrets of the heart that could rebuild a family’s broken bonds.

My review:

I enjoyed this book. The book is told in three parts. Part One is the present with Julia and Jack. They have been married happily for 15 years, and after several miscarriages Julia is about to give birth to their first child. They are both ecstatic. They  have a happy life, even though they have very little money. Then tragedy strikes, and Julia has to face the reality of leaving their home forever. Part Two focuses on Iris, from her childhood, meeting Max and their courtship, her friendship with Lily, and catching up to the present. Part Three is after Julia comes home.

There is so much going on in this book. Julia feels betrayed by her mother’s inaction when her father kicked her out when she was pregnant and wanted to marry Jack. She has no relationship with her father and sister Alex at all. Going home is hard, but she has no other choice. Her return is the catalyst for Iris to examine her life closely and make some difficult decisions.  An event in Iris’s past is still affecting her to this day. Julia and Gus, Lily’s son, grow closer but questions must be answered before anyone can move on with their lives.

This isn’t a romance novel. If anything, it’s a love story between mother and daughter, and also between best friends. Lily and Iris have a lifelong friendship that remains through some huge upsets, requiring forgiveness from both parties. Their bond is unshakable. I liked how Julia finally found her place in the world. Even though she and Jack were incredibly happy together, I had the impression something was still missing for Julia even before he died. Now she seems complete.
