My review:

Alice is back in her small hometown in the northeast, leaving behind a whirlwind law career at a big firm in Chicago. She is at a crossroads both personally and professionally, trying to figure out what she wants from her life. Jackson is a photographer with major wanderlust, in town to visit his grandfather. He is also at a crossroads, having experienced a horrific incident while traveling and a companion’s actions and comments have him questioning everything he is. Several chance meetings throw them together, and they can’t help but give in to their attraction. But neither one plans on staying in Sweetbriar Cove for very long.

This was a cute book. The sneaking around Alice and Jackson have to do since both are staying with an adult relative is hilarious. And they both learned a lot about themselves both individually and together. I loved the characters in the town, too. The way they all come together when someone is in need is true small town life at its best.

Excerpt:

What is all of this?” she asks, flipping through the pages of my chicken scratch.
“Ideas from Marnie.”
“Who’s Marnie?”
“The manager I spoke with. Keep up, Jessa.”
“Sorry. Tell me about her.”
“There isn’t much to tell. She was nice. We talked about what went wrong with Becky, where my career has been, and the direction I want to take it. And get this, she outlined a plan for making it happen. We video conferenced for almost three hours, and I’m really impressed with her.”
“So, what happens now?”
“I told her I’m not ready to go back to LA, and she agreed. I’m going to spend the summer working on some of my own songs for the next album. She’s going to talk with the music execs and make sure they’re on the same page as us.”
“And if they’re not?”

“Then we’ll go somewhere else. They aren’t the only label in town. Anyway, Marnie thinks it’s a good idea to lay low after what happened with Todd—let the media interest die down while she works on putting our plan in motion, and when I go to Todd’s
premiere, Marnie and I will meet in person.”

“You still have to go to Todd’s premiere?”
I groan and drop onto the bed beside Jessa.
“Unfortunately.”

“That sucks.”
“It is what it is. I shouldn’t have bashed the hell out of his Porsche or stolen his BMW, although it felt great. Lesson learned. Next time I’ll beat up the guy, not the car.”
“Let’s hope there isn’t a next time. I thought your brother was going to lose his mind when you called and told us what happened. He was ready to hop a plane and hunt Todd down.”
I smile at the thought. Nick isn’t a fighter, but I know he’d go head to head if it meant protecting Jessa or me. “Thank you again for letting me crash here.”
“Stop thanking us. You’re family. This is your home too.”
I rest my hand on hers and squeeze it gently. “Love you, Jessa.”
“I hate to break up the chick fest,” Nick says, appearing in the doorway, “but I’m starving.”
“What are you doing home from work?” I ask.
“Didn’t you hear me? I’m starving. I was hoping one of you would make me lunch.”
I give Jessa a nudge. “He’s your husband.”
Nick holds out his hand and pulls Jessa into his arms. The way they look at each other, with stars in their eyes, is absolutely adorable, and also a little disgusting.

They kiss, and Jessa melts. I want what they have. When Nick deepens the kiss, I throw a pillow at their heads.
“Can you take that into another room, please?”
The two lovebirds laugh and stumble out, but the giggling doesn’t stop. I hear another door shut and then a thump, followed by a moan. I cover my ears and flop back on the bed.
This is going to be a long summer.

Hannah-Rae Dodd is fresh out of a bad relationship has some big decisions to make and if NYC is where she’s going to stay. Matt Miller’s passion for dance has the ability to make him forget about the troubles that await him off the stage. When chance circumstances bring them together, will dancing bring them something more than either expected? The ninth book in the addicting 425 Madison Avenue series, is now live. Read Sightseeing in Manhattan by C. Lesbirel today!

My review:

What a sweet conclusion to the 425 Madison series. I have loved getting to know the different residents of this building and am sad to see it end, but this is the perfect ending note. Hannah-Rae comes to NYC for a year from her home in Wales as a result of winning a contest. She is dedicating her time in Manhattan pursuing her dream of being a ballerina, despite many companies turning her away because of her visual impairment. Matt is working three jobs trying to support his mother and sister after his father left, clearing out their bank account on his way. They are infatuated with each other and bond over their dancing. Their relationship is so sweet and endearing. I love how Hannah-Rae’s fellow contest-winning roommates and new best friends include her and help her get out into the world instead of hiding away like she did back home in Wales.

Hannah-Rae and Matt have such a good relationship, and I love that despite being fairly young (Hannah-Rae is 22) they handle conflicts with refreshing maturity. I also loved the ending.  Ella is a little scene (and heart) stealer and I loved seeing her “happy ending” as well.

About Sightseeing in Manhattan

 Hannah-Rae

On stage at a Magic Mike theme night with the music blaring and her hands trailing the oily, well-defined abs of another man is where Hannah-Rae realizes that maybe she isn’t as heartbroken about her cheating ex as she had first thought. She had known she needed to make some big decisions about life before flying out to NYC, she just hadn’t expected her heart would be calling all the shots.

Matt

He didn’t know why or how his passion for dance had come about. All he knew is that when he was on that stage throwing shapes down, he felt so alive in the moment that he almost forgot about the fact that his little sister was sick and there was absolutely nothing he could do about it. Almost.

When chance circumstances bring us together, will dancing bring us something more than either of us expected?

After all, 425 Madison Avenue is the perfect place to fall in love.

*Each story is completely standalone.

Letting go with one of his hands, he slides his fingertips up my back and to the nape of my neck. Some of my hair tangles between his fingers and he squeezes gently, pulling me up toward him again to meet another waiting kiss.

He spins me back around and commands me to take hold of the wheel and not let go. I do as I’m told and cling to it, not even caring about the direction or thinking about anything other than how good his hands feel, now that they are both free to roam over my body. He traces them over my hips and spans my waist before tracing up to the curve of my breasts and cupping them each, over the top of my cardigan.

“I like this, pink suits you,” he whispers softly into my ear.

“I guessed it was pink from the feel of it. It’s light and soft, like cotton candy.”

“It’s cute. Sometimes you look cute. I thought that when I picked you up. Now you don’t look cute, though.”

“I don’t? Then how do I look now?”

“Breath taking.” He says the word so easily that it sounds natural and believable. Even if I don’t believe it myself, he makes me feel like the most beautiful woman in the entire city.

My long waves blow free in the evening breeze and it’s eerily quiet with the noise of the city in the distant background. “Your curves are the sexiest thing I’ve ever laid eyes on,” he murmurs as his hands come to rest on my waist, pinching gently as though trying to control himself. I’m not sure I want him to.

Excerpt:

“You’re going to break his heart.”

“No, I’m not,” I say. “That’s sort of the whole point. If I really thought leaving him would break his heart, then I probably wouldn’t be leaving him in the first place.”

My best friend, Jen, does not look convinced.

Boxes fill a good half of the room. What a mess. Who knew you could accumulate so much junk in only twelve months? At least we weren’t together so long that I can’t remember who owns what. One year is about the sweet spot for this issue in relationships, apparently.

“The fact of the matter is, we’re not in love. We have no business being engaged, let alone getting married.” I sigh. “Have you seen the packing tape?”

“No. He’s just such a nice guy.”

“I’m not debating that.” I climb to my feet, then head up the stairs to the second bedroom. Thom’s unofficial workout room/home office. Not a room I normally go into. But it only takes a bit of rummaging to find what I’m looking for. Whatever else might be said about them, insurance assessors are organized. The bottom drawer of Thom’s desk has a neat stash of stationery. I grab a couple rolls of thick tape.

“And leaving him this way…” Jen continues as I head back down.

“How many times have I told him we need to talk? He’s always putting it off, saying it’s not a good time. And now he’s away again. I’ve been messaging him for the last week and he barely replies.”

“You know he has to drop everything once a job comes up. I realize he’s not the most exciting guy, Betty, but—”

“I know.” I smack down a line of tape with extra zest, sealing the lid of the last box. In this Operation Abandon Ship Posthaste, I know I’m definitely slightly the bad guy. But not totally. Say sixty/forty. Or maybe seventy/thirty. It’s hard to tell to what degree. “I do know all of that. But he’s always busy with work or away on some business trip. What am I supposed to do?”

A sigh from Jen.

“When you realize you’ve made such a monumental mistake, it’s hard to sit and wait to fix things. Nor is it fair on either of us to keep up the pretense.”

“Guess so.”

“And the fact that he’s yet again made no effort to prioritize our relationship and make a little time for me in his busy schedule is just further proof that I’ve made the right choice in ending this now before it gets any more complicated. End of rant.”

Nothing from her.

“Anyway, you’re supposed to be on my side. Stop questioning me.”

“You wanted to get married and have children so badly.”

“Yeah.” I sit back on my heels. “I blame it all on playing with Ken and Barbie’s dreamhouse when I was little. But it turns out that being in a relationship with the wrong person can be even lonelier than being alone.”

Jen and I have been friends since sharing a room in college. We’ve witnessed the bulk of each other’s dating ups and downs. For some reason, I’m the type of girl who guys will go out with, but don’t tend to stick with. Apparently, I’m fuckable—just not girlfriend material. Maybe it’s my smart mouth. Maybe it’s the whole not fitting current societal expectations of beauty i.e. I’m fat. Maybe I was born under an unlucky star. I don’t know; it’s their loss. Like anyone, I have my faults, but all in all, I’m awesome. And I have a lot to give. Too often in the past few months, I’ve had to keep reminding myself of this fact.

“There are just so many jerks out there,” Jen says. “I was happy that you’d found a good one.”

“I think I’d prefer a jerk who was genuinely into me than a nice guy phoning it in.

Honestly, I’d rather go adopt a dozen cats and settle into old age and isolation than be with someone who treats me as if I’m an afterthought.”

She looks at me for a long moment, then nods slowly. “I’m sorry it didn’t work out.”

“Me too.”

“Time to start filling up the cars. Boy, do you owe me.”

I smile. “That I do.”

Jen stands and stretches before picking up one of the boxes labeled kitchen. “I just didn’t want you to do something you’d regret, you know?”

“I know. Thank you.”

Alone in the two-bedroom condo, everything is silent. My parting letter sits waiting on the coffee table with his name written on the front. A slight bulge in the envelope betrays the shape of my engagement ring. It’s a sweet, simple ring. One small diamond perched on a band of yellow gold. My hand feels wrong without it. Naked. They say there are different love languages and you have to take the time to learn your partner’s needs. It’s like he and I never quite got there. Or maybe I’m just crappy at relationships.

The bridal magazines I’d collected are in the trash. Perhaps I should have taken them into the florist shop where I work so someone could get some use out of them. But this feels more symbolic, more definite. My family are a couple of states away, and I have only a few of what I’d classify as good friends. Being an introvert makes it hard to meet people. A boyfriend, a husband, would mean I’m no longer alone. Someone cares about me and puts me first. At least part of the time. Only Thom doesn’t any of the time, so here we are.

I tighten my ponytail of long dark hair. Then, in a rare display of dexterity that my yoga instructor would be proud of, I stack three boxes in my arms and head outside into the hot afternoon sun. Jen’s Honda Civic is parked at the curb, the trunk standing open as she moves things about inside. My old Subaru sits in the driveway waiting to be filled. Birds are singing and insects chirping. It’s your typical mild autumn day in California.

That’s when the condo blows up behind me.

My review:

This was a pretty good book. Nora and Grayson are adorable together, and so are Nora’s brother Nick and his wife Jessa. I loved their relationship with Nora. But the kids’ relationships with Nora are heart melting! Those kids were just the best.

I liked how Nora and Grayson respected each other and worked together as a team. I did really enjoy their story, but for some reason I didn’t *love* it. There isn’t really anything wrong with the book at all. Slightly predictable, but not terribly so. The conflict wasn’t quite what I anticipated, and was resolved well. I can’t think of anything specific that I disliked at all. Everyone was amazing, and maybe that’s the source of my discontent. They all seemed too perfect.

Overall, though, this was a good book. It’s a sweet love story between two people who complete each other.

Bodyguard to the Billionaire by Nana Malone

Title: Bodyguard to the Billionaire
Series: The Billionaire Duet #1

Author: Nana Malone

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: July 23, 2019

Blurb
Derrick Arlington is one of the world’s most eligible billionaires. Voted
Sexiest Man Alive—two years running.
And I just so happen to look exactly like him.
It’s never came in handy until I get offered an actual job out of it.
It was supposed to be so simple.
Go to the Winston Isles, stand in as his body double for a few weeks, go back to
my life.
But when our carefully constructed plan goes awry and the billionaire goes missing, I have no choice but to take his place and hire a bodyguard. The best in
the business: a smart-mouthed, tight-assed, lady bodyguard.
Zia Barnes is the LAST thing I want, even if I need her. She’s determined, smart,
and has no idea I’m a total imposter.
Good thing I have no intention on falling for her, or I’d be royally screwed.

My review:

With Bodyguard to the Billionaire, Nana Malone brings us back to the Winston Isles, this time focusing on Zia, one of the King’s Knights and a member of Ariel’s Royal Elite team. This is technically a standalone duet, but the usual cast of royals are players in this as well. And fair warning, this is part one of a duet, ending in a cliffhanger.

Theo is a regular guy from New Jersey, developing an app with his best friend Kyle and taking care of his mom who has cancer. He is given the opportunity to make enough money to take care of all her needs and launch his business, all he has to do is be a body double for a billionaire and take his place in his life for thirty days. Simple, right? Not when no one is supposed to know who he really is and yet a guy with a gun calls Theo by his real name and attempts to kidnap him.

This was a good start to the story. I liked getting to know Zia more, and the addition of her family life was nice. “Catching up” with the royal family is always fun, too. The tension that Theo carries trying to pull off being Derrick is palpable – we can really feel the conflict he is feeling in every aspect of his life.

I do have theories of what is really going on, but I won’t speculate here because spoilers. But this is a book in the Winston Isles world that is definitely worth reading.

Excerpt
“Get rid of
her, or she comes with us.”
“I’m not
going anywhere, buddy.” I jabbed him in the chest in an attempt to create more
space. In close combat with this guy, I’d lose. Sure, I was faster and nimbler.
But one good hit and I’d be down.
His sharp,
slashing brows drew down. “Suit yourself. I know what to do with someone like
you.”
I’d bet he
did. And none of those things included me sleeping in my warm cozy bed tonight.
“Babe, come on the royal family wants a photo.”
Gray Eyes
arched a brow. “Darling, you go ahead I’ll meet you there.” His voice was sin
and bad decisions mixed together.
I stood my
ground. Now was no time for him to be noble. “Oh, I know King Sebastian
insists.”
“I’ll have
to pass, love.”
“Yeah, you
heard him, he’ll have to —”
He was
talking and also raising his right arm. All I saw was the black gleam, and I
acted, launching myself in the air and slamming against Gray Eyes. Toppling him
over and covering his body with mine, tranq gun raised.
Wasting no
time, I squeezed twice. The asshole about to shoot at us was big. Who knew if
two doses would be enough? But I was prepared to run.
The
muscle-bound brute fell to his knees. I rolled on my back, ready for anything.
But I
didn’t need to worry. Two hits with the tranq had done the job.
I sucked in
a shuddering breath.
When I
turned to my bed of muscles, he was glaring at me. “Do you have a bloody death
wish?”
His voice
had lost some of the sin quality. It was colder, like he was pissed.
I pushed to
my feet. “What? You wanted me to let you go with that asshole? He was going to
kill you.”
“I promise
you, I’m quite capable.”
Unbelievable. “You could have fooled me. Men
wielding weapons and shoving you into a car are generally bad news.”
His gaze
narrowed as he glowered at me. “I had it under control.”
I crossed
my arms. “Oh, so you’re delusional. Okay then. Goodbye, crazy. And P.S. You’re
welcome.”
“You
generally only say thank you when you’re glad someone did something.”
I shook my
head. “For fuck’s sake. Next time I’ll let you die then. Pity. You look
expensive, like someone would miss you, but it’s no skin off my back. I’ll just
let the homicidal asshole kill you when he wakes up.”
“You could
have been hurt. Did you pay attention to what just happened?”
“You mean
besides me putting on a display of badassery the likes of which you’ve never
seen? I also made this couture look damn good. Oh yes… and saved your ass.”
“My ass
didn’t need saving, princess.”
“I’m not a
princess, asshole. I’m a King’s Knight. I don’t need anybody to save me. Have a
nice life.” As I strutted off, I flipped him the bird.

USA Today Bestselling Author, NANA MALONE’s love of all
things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense she
borrowed from her cousin on a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana at a precocious
thirteen. She’s been in love with kick butt heroines ever since.
With her overactive imagination, and channeling her inner
Buffy, it was only a matter a time before she started creating her own
characters. Waiting for her chance at a job as a ninja assassin, Nana, meantime
works out her drama, passion and sass with fictional characters every bit as
sassy and kick butt as she thinks she is.

The books in her series have been on multiple Amazon Kindle

list and most notably the USA Today Bestseller list.

Until that ninja job comes through, you’ll find Nana working
hard on additional books for her series as well as other fun, sassy romances
for characters that won’t leave her alone. And if she’s not working or hiding
in the closet reading, she’s acting out scenes for her husband, daughter and

Lies by Kylie Scott

Lies - RB banner.jpg

Lies, a steamy, fast paced standalone filled with the perfect blend of heat and humor from New York Times bestselling author Kylie Scott, is available now!

Lies FOR WEB.jpg

Betty Dawsey knows that breaking things off with Thom Lange is for the best. He’s nice, but boring, and their relationship has lost its spark. But steady and predictable Thom, suddenly doesn’t seem so steady and predictable when their condo explodes and she’s kidnapped by a couple of crazies claiming that Thom isn’t who he says he is.

Thom is having a hellish week. Not only is he hunting a double agent, but his fiancé dumped him, and thanks to his undercover life, she’s been kidnapped.

Turns out Thom is Operative Thom and he’s got more than a few secrets to share with Betty if he’s going to keep her alive. With both their lives on the line, their lackluster connection is suddenly replaced by an intense one. But in his line of work, feelings aren’t wanted or desired. Because feelings can be a lethal distraction.

My review:

When I start reading a book for review, I confess I usually have forgotten what it is about. I read the blurb when I sign up and only pick books that sound interesting to me, but generally I have no idea what I’m getting into when I start a new book.

Lies began like most other romance novels, the female lead talking about her romantic relationship with her best friend. In this case, Betty is packing up her belongings and leaving her fiance Thom. Thom is too emotionally distant, absolutely never prioritizes Betty, and is very lackluster in bed. Perfectly average and very boring

This book, however, is like thinking you are watching 27 Dresses then being dropped into the middle of Mr & Mrs Smith. I was beyond “pleasantly surprised” – the book went from run of the mill romance to “holy crap what just happened??” Betty is quite surprised to learn that Thom is not an insurance adjuster after all.To stay alive, though, no one else can know that she left Thom. What follows is a fast-paced, intense, and exciting journey across both geographical and emotional distance. Betty wasn’t in love with Thom the insurance adjuster, but Thom the secret agent is a completely different person.

I loved this book. It takes the reader on a roller coaster of emotions and made my mouth drop in shock more than once. Lies is going in my re-read list, for sure.

Sidecar Crush by Claire Kingsley with Lucy Score

51P3VnDrW6L.jpg

“I tried to think of something—anything—to calm my raging hard-on. One wrong move and Leah Mae would rub up against it and that was liable to kill me dead on the spot.” — Jameson Bodine

Model turned disgraced reality TV starlet, Leah Mae Larkin, crash lands in her hometown of Bootleg Springs to lay low while a scandal threatens her career. She can’t shake the feeling that her agent—and supposed fiancé—manipulated her into the role of made-for-TV homewrecker. Connecting with her roots is just what she needs, and Bootleg Springs is home to her father, moonshine, and her childhood best friend, Jameson Bodine.

Only there’s nothing childlike about Jameson—a man who turns scrap metal into art and isn’t afraid to throw down on a rowdy Friday night with his brothers and hellcat sister. He might not say much, but still waters run deep. Seeing the ring on his crush’s finger? He doesn’t like it, but he can’t wish it away. No more than he can wish away the trouble his family is in, with evidence pointing to his late father in the cold case disappearance of Callie Kendall.

Jameson and Leah Mae are just two friends reliving their summers together, blowing off steam, and having fun for the first time in a long time. But Leah Mae is realizing what’s really important in her life, and it isn’t what she thought.

And sometimes steam turns into sparks—hot as molten steel—and friends aren’t just friends.

My review:

This is the second book in the Bootleg Springs series by Claire Kingsley and Lucy Score. Since they are all available in Kindle Unlimited, I’ve been reading them back to back. It is SO nice to be able to continue a series immediately! There are no cliffhangers and each book is a standalone, but there is a side story of a cold case disappearance that unfolds throughout the books so you definitely want to read them in order for this reason.

Jameson is the second-eldest Bodine sibling, a quiet metal sculptor who mostly keeps to himself and his family. Leah Mae was his childhood best friend who grew up summering in Bootleg Springs with her father, until the disappearance of Callie Kendall scares Leah Mae’s mother into keeping her home during the summers after that. Leah grows up to pursue her dream of modeling and acting, and finds herself on a reality show in order to boost her career.

Leah and her fiance/agent are in Bootleg Springs visiting Leah’s father when his health condition makes her decide to stay longer. As she and Jameson rebuild their friendship, scandal on both of their sides tries to keep them apart.

I am loving this series. Each of the Bodines has something unique to contribute to the family and yet they love each other fiercely. And the townspeople are amazing. These books make me laugh out loud frequently. This book is slightly angstier than the previous one – hello tortured artist type – but not overly so.

This is also a no-cheating book, despite Leah Mae having a fiance in the beginning.
