My review:

So this book…

I was very intrigued at first. The first half of the book was wonderful – what would it be like to share your husband with two other wives? Thursday (I can’t believe that was her real name in the end) was happy with their arrangement, but then her curiosity got the better of her and she grew discontent. But then the “psychological thriller” part of the book takes over. Seriously, it’s like the same story told as two different genres mashed together. What is the truth about Seth and his wives? Is Thursday a reliable narrator?

In the end, it was an entertaining read, if a bit of a mindf***. I’m still not 100% clear on who the actual villain was in the situation, but pretty certain there are several. But the ending seemed a bit too convenient – give the main character an undefined mental illness, change the narrative of all the information we’ve been given to exist within that narrative, et voila, c’est finit. The end… sort of. Thursday goes from a likable, sympathetic character to something totally different, and the way the book ends is so out of character from the person we got to know throughout the entire book.

But I didn’t hate it. The book did it’s job, it was entertaining and twisty and a good way to spend a post-holiday afternoon.

Happy Holidays!

christmas-books-554x421

Where are the reviews?

You may have noticed that the book reviews have slowed down. That’s intentional – there is only one me, and this time of year is BUSY. Not only with the normal holiday stuff, but work, kid sports, plus all the stuff that comes with leadership roles in Girl Scouts (both troop leader of a large troop and service unit manager). Also – Girl Scout cookies are coming soon!

I started this book review blog since I’m a big reader anyway, and figured I might as well review all the books I read, and then discovered how to sign up to get advanced review copies from different promotional companies. I have greatly reduced the amount of books that I sign up to review right now so that I can still enjoy reading without it becoming a chore or obligation.

So what is coming in the new year?

Don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere. January and February already have several books on the schedule, including a second season of the 425 Madison series, new books by Teagan Hunter and Claudia Burgoa, and many more. Too many to remember off the top of my head, although I do know there are several I’m excited to get my hands on! And I still have one more review scheduled for December, The Wives by Tarryn Fisher releasing December 30.

So until then, I wish you all a happy holiday season.

Humbugged by Pippa Grant and Lili Valente

Title: Humbugged
Authors: Pippa Grant & Lili Valente
Genre: Romantic Comedy

 Release Date: December 10, 2019

Blurb

He’s the world’s most alpha Marine and the last man I should be letting jingle my bells this holiday season. So why does Clint O’Dell keep running through my thoughts wearing nothing but a Santa hat? And why do I stupidly agree that we should be Christmas friends with benefits?

Someone must have spiked my eggnog.

I don’t do Marines.

Or Santas.

I learned my lesson about both the hard way.

But when Clint steps in to rescue me—from a murderous goose, a rogue reindeer, and the ghost of Christmas Right Now causing trouble in my bakery—I can’t help but wonder if we’re meant to be more than friends.

If maybe Clint is the holiday miracle I’ve been praying for…or if all the magic will disappear with the season.

Humbugged is a laugh out loud holiday romp featuring a Marine with a heart of gold and a baker in need of a hero. Complete with the world’s most awkward Christmas caroling, a photoshoot with furry friends, and more naughty baked goods than is good or decent.

My review:

I have a confession to make:

I was not planning on reading this book.

The series, while enjoyable, is too heavy on slapstick type humor and animals who apparently have human-like abilities. And with the way Clint was introduced in Hitched, I was afraid this was going to take all that even further.

I was pleasantly surprised, and so glad I did read it!

Clint is a Marine stationed at home as a recruiter, after several years of deployments. Noelle is a baker who moved to Happy Cat recently for a fresh start. Having grown up the daughter of a Marine single dad, she has done her time in a military family and doesn’t want that life anymore, so a Marine is the last person she wants to be in a relationship with. But it’s the holidays, and the residents of Happy Cat (human, animal, and ghost) along with fate seem to be pushing the two of them together.

This was a fun Christmas book. There wasn’t a lot of drama, which was refreshing, and the humor didn’t feel like trying to hard, as has been the case in past books in this series. Clint and Noelle have incredible chemistry, and I love how the other ladies befriend her, even without Clint being in the picture. It was refreshing to see women becoming friends because they click with each other, instead of “ok you’re involved with my brother/best friend/whatever so we have to get along.”

There is a little bit of mystery, and a lot of family love, and a bit of animal antics, but at the core this is a great story of a couple finding their Person when and where they least expect.

Sexy As Sin by Julie Kriss

🔥🔥 NEW RELEASE 🔥🔥

Sexy as Sin by Julie Kriss is LIVE!!! They’re rich, they’re dirty, and they get tamed one by one! Sexy as Sin is Dane and Ava’s story!

Second chances burn hotter

The assignment should be a fashion stylist’s dream. Dane Scotland—brilliant programmer, millionaire, partner in my brother’s company—is going to a big-money meeting, and he needs to look the part.

The problem? Dane doesn’t want a makeover. He’s grumpy and reclusive, and his wardrobe consists of two pairs of old jeans. He doesn’t want me anywhere near him.

Did I mention that he’s my brother’s best friend? And that no one knows exactly what Dane and I got up to ten years ago?

The nerd I knew is gone—Dane ditched his glasses and bulked up. Now he’s six-foot-plus of hot genius, but I can be professional. I can definitely keep my hands off him. Again.

But when he looks at me like he used to, like no one else ever has, the only thing I want is to lose control.

Dane and I gave each other our first taste of heartbreak. Are we destined for another round?

My review:

This second chance romance is honestly better than I expected. Ava is a broke stylist and fashion blogger, determined to make it on her own without help from her successful big brother. Dane is one of of her brother’s four partners and best friends, based at the company’s Chicago location. He is the stereotypical computer nerd, not caring about much outside coding and creating, and definitely not his appearance or networking. He is meeting a prominent Japanese businessman and the company needs him to make a good impression, so Ava’s brother sends her to Chicago to give Dane a makeover and basically teach him how to act in public and at business dinners. But Ava’s brother doesn’t know that she and Dane have History. Capital-H History.

I enjoyed this book a lot. Ava and Dane opening up to each other again slowly, talking about things that happened in the past and finally being mature enough to hear each other out. And their connection is so intense. The other characters add a lot to the story as well. I’m looking forward to reading about the other three partners.

The tailor squawked as Dane pushed him aside, striding toward me in his underwear. He put his hands on the arms of my chair and leaned over me, his eyes on mine. I could see every inch of his naked skin. He glared at me.

“I get it,” he growled. “You’re pushing me. It’s what you do. Are you trying to see how far you can go?”

My voice came out breathy. God, I could smell him. “I’m not doing anything,” I said, and we both knew it was a lie.

“What do you want?” Dane said, thick with frustration. “Do you want me to say I’m sorry?”

My hands went cold and my breath stopped. “Sorry for what?”

“You know what. Sorry for what I did the last time I saw you.”

He thought he had to apologize for that? As if he had done something wrong? Had he thought that all this time? I couldn’t bear the idea. “No,” I told him. “Don’t say you’re sorry for that.”

He still watched me, his voice softening a little. “I’ll say it if you want me to.”

“Don’t,” I choked out. “Don’t.”

A muscle in his jaw twitched, and then he shook his head, backing off. “Can I at least put my clothes on now?”

I didn’t answer, and he didn’t wait for it. He grabbed his clothes and shoes and put them under his arm. “I’m going to dress in the men’s room,” he growled. “I’d like some privacy for a second.”

I still couldn’t speak. Dane walked away, and I downed the rest of the champagne in my glass, gulping it. He thought I wanted him to apologize. That fucking man.

That brilliant, stupid, utterly infuriating man.

I put my heels back on and stood up, looking at the suits and fabrics in the room. Now that the measurements were—mostly—done, I talked to the tailor about cuts, fabrics, and colors. Then my phone rang. Only after I hung up did I realize that Dane hadn’t come out of the bathroom, which was around the corner and down the hall.

“Would you like me to go find him?” the tailor asked politely.

“No need,” I said as suspicion bloomed in my gut. I walked around the corner myself, pushing open the door to the men’s room. “Dane!”

The room was empty.

“Fuck,” I said as the tailor came in after me. I turned to him. “Is there a back door?”

He looked stunned. Most likely, none of his rich clients had ever made an escape while getting measured for a bespoke suit. “At the end of the hall,” he said.

“Fuck,” I said again. I half-ran down the hall, moving as fast as I could in my three-inch heels. I slammed the back door open and saw nothing but parking lot.

Dane was gone.
