My proper southern belle mama might disagree, but I say I was born to be a rebel. From the second I got my hands on a pair of drumsticks, my future was sealed. I never fit in anyway, not with my rocker soul and curves that never take a day off.

But what’s a drummer without a band? Oh, that’s right. A cocktail waitress.

That is, until the chance of a lifetime falls into my lap—Unrequited needs a drummer, and I happen to have an ‘in’ with the band.

The only trouble is, Santiago Garza, Unrequited’s broody, scowly bassist, doesn’t want me in his band, which is kind of funny, considering he was the one who took my heart and stomped all over it five years ago.

My career is far more important than hurt feelings though, so Santiago can suck it up and deal. That’s what I’m doing, no matter how many times I remember the feel of his lips on mine. I won’t fall for him this time. I’m done being anyone’s second choice.

My review:

Maeve is a drummer working as a waitress and living with her best friend in NYC. She runs into her old friends from high school, who happen to be the band Unrequited and the sister of one of the members. Turns out they need a drummer so she auditions and joins their tour.

We get bits and pieces of whatever happened between Santiago and Maeve in flashback chapters scattered throughout the book. Because of that incident, followed by some experiences and a failed relationship in LA, Maeve has built a fortress around her heart. She uses anger to protect herself from getting close to Santi again while at the same time bonding with her new bandmates.

This was a pretty good book. I was entertained, but didn’t love it. Their age difference (7 years) and Maeve’s understandable immaturity and inexperience five years previously made their past a bigger deal than it needed to be, and Santiago’s communication problems didn’t help matters at all. Once they finally had a real conversation they were great. But leading up to that was a lot of frustrated reading. I loved her interactions with the band, though. And the underlying girl power theme was amazing. There were some great lines and hidden insights.

If you like rockstar romances, you will enjoy this one I’m sure. The characters seem to come alive, they are so well written.
