Whiskey Chaser (Bootleg Springs Book 1) by Claire Kingsley and Lucy score

Blurb:

Raised by her three overbearing brothers, Scarlett is a hell-raising tomboy with a tool belt. A tornado stirring up trouble everywhere she goes. Her favorite pastimes? Drinking any man under the table and two-stepping. But she has zero interest in love. Scarlett’s only being neighborly when she claims her sexy next-door neighbor as her new pet project.

Devlin is a man at rock bottom. Marriage, political career, five-year plan to Washington, D.C. All destroyed with one well-placed jab. The golden boy is now the black sheep relegated to Bootleg Springs, a tiny West Virginia town with two claims to fame: 1. Moonshine and 2. The cold case disappearance of a teen girl.

Devlin just wants to lick his wounds. But Scarlett has other ideas for his tongue… and the rest of him. She’s determined to bring him back to life, even if getting him back on his feet means never seeing him again. But when an old mystery becomes new news, she’ll need his help to survive the scandal.

My review:

I’ve been given the opportunity to review book 5 in this series, and since I already had Whiskey Chaser sitting in my Kindle Unlimited TBR list I decided to start with this one and binge up to the last book. I wasn’t familiar with Lucy Score‘s writing but love Claire Kingsley‘s Miles family series. I was confident this would be an enjoyable book, but it was so much more. I adored it. Scarlett is a fierce fireball of a woman who had me laughing out loud. She lives her life to the fullest and is just what Devlin needs. He is licking his wounds after a scandal sends him from the state capitol, and has only lived a life consisting of duty and expectations. They are SO good together. I simply adored Granny Louisa and Estelle. Scarlett’s brothers were hilarious and the fight scene between Scarlett and her best friend Cassidy had me cackling. This book was a fantastic start to the series and I can’t wait to dive into them all!

Lucy Score grew up in rural Pennsylvania with a lot of time on her hands and a big imagination. She was the oldest of three in a literary household. Dinners were often spent in silence while family members had their noses buried in books. A passion for writing took hold at five when she taught her brother to write his name on the bathroom door.

She started writing (on paper) in the second grade, first about pilgrims on the Mayflower and over the years graduated to essays, articles, blogs, and finally books.

Before becoming a full-time writer, Lucy pretended to be a normal adult by holding down jobs that included event planner, bartender, newspaper lackey, and yoga instructor.

Lucy and Mr. Lucy, enjoy spending time with their ten nieces and nephews and are determined to learn to sail so they can live on a sailboat in the Caribbean someday.

Only Ever You by CD Reiss

OEY - RB Banner

The boy next door is now the man of her dreams.

From New York Times bestselling author CD Reiss comes a story of friendship, romance, and growing into a love that was always there. Only Ever You an all new swoon-worthy standalone is available now!

only ever you hires

Rachel knew exactly what turning thirty would be like. She had a plan, after all. First college, then a climb up the professional ladder. Love, marriage, children. All of it was on the schedule.

The cheap Hollywood apartment wasn’t on the list. Neither were the string of heartbreaks. Or her the effect her mother’s cancer had on her career.

It’s hard to stay practical and on-point when everything takes a left turn.

Enter Sebastian, the nerd across the street. The boy she defended when he couldn’t defend himself. The best friend she promised she’d marry if life didn’t go according to plan.

Not only is he successful, confident, and gorgeous, he still has their handwritten marriage contract.

No one goes through with childhood wedding pacts.

That’s crazy.

But their families might just be crazy enough to rent a hall and set a date. All Rachel and Sebastian have to do is fall in love.

My review

I enjoyed this book so much.

One big thing I liked was the fact that Rachel is a writer’s assistant on a romance show – sounds like each episode is a different story – but she doesn’t buy the whole instalove romance cliches. All her arguments with her job are ones I have with the genre too. Sebastian was amazing. And their families! There was just so much going on in this book but in a good way that I can’t even pick my favorite part.

Seriously, read this book. There isn’t anything I didn’t like about it.

About CD Reiss

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up she’s at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

She’s frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn’t ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.
