Iris has escaped an abusive marriage and after two years with no contact from her ex she has moved back to Texas. She is next door to Callan and his sister, whom he has custody of, and they share a mutual friend in their neighbor Carmen, who takes each of them under her wing. At first they clash, but then a relationship develops between them and it’s beautiful. Iris is a great companion to Callan’s sister. Callan is patient with Iris, letting her move things forward between them on her terms as she’s comfortable. She blends seamlessly into his friends group as well.
I do wish we had more of Callan’s backstory. I was able to piece together a little of it but we never are really told much about his past. We definitely know more about Iris’s history.
Overall this was a really good book. There was a bit of suspense that kept things interesting and the characters on their toes. But not so much that it became over the top.
to write, just don’t ask her to write about herself. If she isn’t writing,
you can find her lost in a book or trying to get her doggo to take a selfie
with her. He usually refuses. At the end of the day, you can find Emma at the
closest Mexican restaurant eating queso and sipping on a margarita. She lives
in Texas with her husband and dog.
