As the team grows close, the serial killer shifts focus putting them all in danger. Cas should walk away before their sizzling attraction distracts him and gets them both killed. But as the threat pushes Cas and Alta closer, the temptation turns too hot for either to resist.
With their focus diverted the threat zeroes in, catching everyone off guard. Figuring out the players in the killer’s cat and mouse game is key to Alta’s survival. Cas swore he would protect her but with the clues carefully hidden, can he figure it out before Alta disappears for good?
I really enjoyed this book.
Alta, Birdie to her friends, is a park ranger who loves her job and the animals she helps protect. They don’t look at her with sympathy or concern over her paranoid quirks. She is a survivor, but the trauma of her past manifests in OCD to feel safe. The trauma also has made it impossible for her to have relationships since she startles easily and cannot stand being touched by men, even in a platonic fashion. Cas is a former Marine, demoted because of a violent outburst. He suffers from PTSD and nightmares, and has resigned himself to a life alone. When a potential serial killer takes Cas and his partner on the case to Estes Park, they are teamed up with Alta who worked the most recent abduction in the park. Even as the danger starts getting too close to Alta, the attraction between Alta and Cas intensifies.
Alta and Cas both have a truckload of baggage. Alta survived being kidnapped and held for days, and Cas survived a horrific war experience. Each has resigned themselves to a solitary life, Alta because she can’t feel safe around most people and Cas in order to keep others safe from his violent dreams. They are both surprised to realize that they are different with each other. Alta not only tolerates but relishes Cas’s touch, and Cas opens up with Alta in a way he never has before. He also gets real sleep for the first time ever with her.
This is a story of two damaged people who complete each other’s broken pieces so they can heal. The Alta and Cas at the end of the book are almost unrecognizable compared to the Alta and Cas in the first chapters. Both of them come so far over the course of this story. The suspense portion of this romantic suspense is incredible, too. Women go missing from the park seemingly without a trace. The cases seem to be related to a string of disappearances in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park that ended when the Estes Park cases began. Cas, Chandler, and Alta work around the clock to find out who is behind these disappearances, and once Alta is targeted things really get intense.
This was such a good book. There was a little bit of instalove, but not terrible. And of course there is a dog that I fell in love with. Benny the German shepherd is amazing.
Falling for the Chance and has no plans of stopping. Her novels are witty, action-packed, and offer enough steam for a great facial. If you like strong heroines and sexy, tattooed men who can’t keep their hands off them then this author is the one for you.
