Against all odds, the dog walker gets the girl…Addison

Never knowing if someone is genuinely interested in me or my family’s money
keeps my guard up. So when he shows up, my instant hatred for his good looks
and sexy smile is no surprise.

I soon discover that Cole isn’t who I think he is, but I’m afraid to lower my
walls and let him in. After his relentless pursuing, I find myself being led
down a path I never thought possible.

I never thought I deserved to have the white picket fence life – until her. The
last thing I expect to find when I knock on my client’s door is the answer to
my deepest desires.

One look and I know Addison is out of my league. That will not stop me from
trying to make her mine… but my past might.

My review:

TGIO! (Thank god it’s over)

So Addison is in California staying with her cousin/best friend Heather, who is also BFFs with Cole, the asshole dog walker who literally screws his way through is client list, one house at a time. He meets Addison at Heather’s house and decides she’s his next conquest. Heather has determined they are perfect for each other and is trying to set them up. Cole and Addison go from hating each other, to hate-banging against the wall in the foyer, to head over heels in a matter of days – after she’s avoided him since the foyer incident. Then all the back and forth drama between them, and Heather and Wyatt, Cole’s other bff.

Every single one of these characters seem to have stopped maturing at 13 and become alcoholics. All are recent college graduates, but even with all the partying Heather has managed to start her own PR company with an elite Hollywood clientele, and Wyatt is making a literal fortune walking dogs a couple hours a day. What the what??

And the antagonist characters are complete stereotypes. Cold, manipulative ex-fiance. Cold, hard father. Clingy, desperate ex-girlfriend. It’s like they were copied out of “Romance Villains R Us” verbatim.

The way Addison and Heather treat Cole and Wyatt is ridiculous. Especially Heather – Wyatt has car trouble and she berates him for showing up with dirty clothes. The solution is simple but instead of being a human and letting it go, she acts like a spoiled brat and pouts, barely speaking to him all evening.  The only thing that could have been good in this book was the dogs, but they are barely mentioned. I think the author forgot Heather even had a dog for much of the book since she was only mentioned when Cole would show up to walk her each morning.

Can I have those couple hours back please?

Maybe Later by Claudia Burgoa

Title: Maybe Later
Author: Claudia Burgoa
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: March 7, 2019

My personal assistant—a.k.a. half my brain—has abandoned me to have a baby. Alright, alright, I’m not a total jerk, but the temporary virtual assistant Carla left in her place is driving me crazy.
I’ve repeatedly refused to fill out Amy Walker’s way-too-friendly questionnaire. But somehow, she ninjas me into giving up details about my private life—all while suffering her oh-so-subtle jabs at my likes, dislikes, even my system for running my business.
I don’t care what she heard, I am not a problem child. I just know what’s tried and true.
At first, her feel-good P.S. quotes sounded more like B.S. Yet our emails and texts gradually take on a new dimension, and I find myself thinking of her as something I haven’t cultivated in a long time. A friend.
Maybe she’s right. It’s time I get a life. Starting with stepping out from behind the screen and putting my feelings on the line. I’ll never know unless I try.
Note: Contains a grumpy, workaholic tech CEO with a guarded heart, and a virtual assistant whose skills border on diabolical. Also, two cats named Ramen and Sushi.

My review:

What a fun book this was! A lot of the story is told via messages between Jackson and Amy. Amy’s responses to Jackson’s demands had me laughing out loud. The man obviously doesn’t handle change well and the resulting interactions were very entertaining.  I really liked how the characters connected with each other. They started out as antagonists and slowly began to respect each other, and then moved to friendship. I was really pulling for these two to find their way.

While this book is lighter and without the angst of many of Claudia’s books, the underlying theme of many of hers is the same: you have to love yourself in order to wholly love another. I love that so many of her characters actively try to work on their mental health, whether they have relatively minor issues or major illnesses. Our society has such a stigma around mental illnesses and books like this go a long way to break down those barriers.  And as always, I love the little glimpses of other characters in the Burgoa Universe – another VAES client, an inscription in a used bookstore, minor character appearances, just enough to make me smile and think “I know you!”

Mrs. Jones,
Thank you for your inquiry about our services and for filling out our initial application. It’ll be a pleasure to help you find just the right virtual assistant for your need. Please, let me make sure we got some details right. On the application, you describe your current boss as impatient, aggressive, micromanaging, and somehow a social piranha. Did I misread it? Is there a possibility that this was a typo?
If you could please correct or expand on your description, I’ll appreciate it. Mrs. Darlington explained our mission correctly. We always find the most fitting assistant for your company. Even for social piranhas. We have the right person for that. Our personnel is highly trained and holds at least a bachelor degree.
Best Regards,
E. Lancaster, CEO
