ERICA:
Signing up for a matchmaking service was not my idea. But when Andrew the hand model dumped me, my brother suggested I try Mr. Match. And I figured it couldn’t hurt–as it was, I’d never get away from meathead moron soccer players (since my brother plays keeper for the South Bay Sharks and I manage PR for the team.)
But Mr. Match is a moron too because he matched me with a guy I see at work every day. A guy who has a different girl on his arm at every turn. And a soccer player. Fernando Fuerte, the “Fuerte Fire,” is one guy I can assure you is NOT my match.
FERNANDO:
Getting girls is not a problem. Getting girls who care about something besides my status as the South Bay Sharks star striker, my salary, and my social status? Yeah. That’s the problem. So when my buddy Max tells me he’s actually Mr. Match–the secret proprietor of San Diego’s hottest matchmaking app, I let him convince me to try it.
And Erica Johnson is not actually a bad match–only she doesn’t seem to agree. And then there’s the small matter of her being in the middle of trying to save the team (and me) when the owner’s ex brings to light some, ahem, unsavory accusations about me… and then there’s her enormous and disapproving twin brother…and there’s something about cheese, too.
But if I have my way? Erica will definitely be my match.

My review:

This was a fun book. Fernando is a professional soccer player who has a reputation as a player, but it’s all an act. He takes care of his mother and helps with the kids’ soccer team that gave him his start in the sport. Erica is the team’s PR person and twin sister of one of Fernando’s teammates. They seem to have a mutual dislike of each other. When they are matched by the Mr Match dating site, they both balk at the idea. Then when Fernando is falsely accused in a scandal involving the team owner’s ex wife, Erica has to fix the problem.

I did enjoy this book. I especially loved Fernando’s relationship with his mom, and Erica’s closeness with her brother. They have the same “us against the world” bond after a family tragedy. Erica and Fernando have a good connection, too. Once they stop making assumptions about each other, they bring out the best in each other. I was so disappointed when this book ended! I am looking forward to more in this series for sure.

A to Z Reasons Why La Yacata is the Place to Be in Any Disaster: A Prepper’s Guide to Mexico by CE Flores

AtoZ2019BookTourToday I’m reviewing another book for the A to Z Challenge Book Review Tour – A to Z Reasons Why La Yacata is the Place to Be in Any Disaster: A Prepper’s Guide to Mexico by CE Flores This book is different than most books I read. This is a fairly fast read, with 26 different chapters each describing a type of disaster and how to survive. The main idea of the book is that the rural Mexican community of La Yacata is the best place to survive any disaster, so all the chapters conclude with reasons why La Yacata fits the need.

The disasters outlined range from the common – blizzard, drought, hailstorm, wildfire – to the absurd. I highly doubt we are in danger of a zombie apocolypse or a UFO invasion. Political upheaval is responsible for a few of the chapters so some of these are plausible, too.

The book contains many good ideas for emergency preparedness, something that many families lack. Some are common sense, some are things most people don’t think of until it is too late. Many of the chapters also have brief history lessons that were interesting.

While I normally would not have read this type of book since I am not even remotely a “prepper,” I did learn of some things our family can implement to be better prepared for emergencies that could happen in our area. And while it is not feasible for everyone to travel to La Yacata to survive an apocalyptic scenario (especially since a larger population would destroy most of the reasons why it is a good place to survive a disaster), the book does give insight as to what types of environments are potentially safer than others if someone was worried about that sort of thing.

Excerpt
I sighed heavily as I freed my toes from the death trap heels. “Men have it so easy. You don’t have to put up with this kind of torture. No hair, no make-up to do.”
Dev shrugged. “What can I say? I roll out of bed looking like this.”
My mouth went dry as I pictured him rolling out of bed. In my imagination, he was
wearing a lot less than he was now.
By the time we reached the door to my room, I realized I was running out of time to proposition him. I dropped my shoes to rummage through my purse for the key card. Didn’t I just have it, to show the
guard at the elevator bank? Yeesh.
Dev waited patiently beside me. He even bent down to pick up my shoes for me. The movement of his head near my waist made me pause. Gah.
Trying to ignore the tingling feeling in my stomach, I kept searching. Blindly
I felt a few things, but funnily enough I couldn’t find my card—or my courage.
Oh wait, there it was. It was in the side pocket, along with a ton of sexual tension.
I cleared my throat and tried to sound casual. “Uh, do you want to come in? We could
catch up… or something?”
“Audrey.”
Something in his voice made me look up from the depths of my bag. His eyes were like obsidian in the light lining the never-ending corridor. When he stepped closer,
my back went up against my door.
“Forget I asked,” I murmured.
He ran his thumb over my jaw, and I reflexively tilted my head up to him. He said my name again, his voice even rougher and deeper than before. My bare toes curled
against the carpet.
Still buried in my bag, my hand closed around my key. I was running out of time.
Without really thinking about it, I popped up on my tiptoes and pressed a kiss
to the beard-roughened space between the corner of his mouth and his jaw.
“Thanks for the escort.”
Somehow he moved even closer, because as I went back down on my heels, I found myself flat against the door and his body pressed against mine. It was hot and hard and… oh!
“Audrey?”
“Hmmm?” Was this like Beetlejuice? If he said my name three times in a row, would I come? I looked up to see him lick his lips. He didn’t need his body to pin me to the door—his gaze did the job well enough.
“Give me your damn key,” he growled.
