NOBODY’S LOST (Rescue Me Saga #5) can be read as a standalone novel and new entry point into the Rescue Me Saga.
Ryder Wilson returned from serving multiple deployments, but can’t leave the hell of combat behind him. Frustrated and ashamed of his inability to function in the world, unlike the veterans he had served with, Ryder retreated. When sent on a mission to protect the sister of retired Master Sergeant Adam Montague, Ryder’s days of hiding out may be over. Can he fulfill his mission without failing again?
Megan Gallagher has two big-brother Marines bent on protecting her from the evils of the world, but she’s tougher than they think. When her older brother sends Ryder, one of his recon Marines, to her doorstep in the wee hours one night following a break-in, she realizes he needs rescuing more than she does. A friendship forms quickly, but unexpected passions run hot and complicate her resolve never to have a romantic relationship, much less marriage. So why are her body and her heart betraying her every time he comes near?
Can these two wounded people lower their defenses long enough to allow love to grow?
My review:
I had read several previous books in this series and loved them, so I was excited to come across this book in one of the daily Kindle free books emails I receive. I had missed a couple books in the series, but don’t feel like that detracted from this one at all. Ryder is a discharged Marine suffering from PTSD and survivor’s guilt from a couple bad incidents during his deployments. Megan is the sister of Ryder’s former Master Sergeant, who calls Ryder to go check on her when she has a break-in. He hates being in cities, but can’t let his commander down. They form a friendship, and she decides she wants more. He is attracted to her but doesn’t want to upset her brothers by being with her, and he’s afraid of hurting her during a PTSD episode. Megan has her own scars, though, both physical and emotional. She underwent a complete hysterectomy to relieve her severe endometriosis.
While I enjoyed the previous books in this series, this one felt lacking somehow. The book deals with a serious subject – PTSD of combat veterans – but I don’t think it gives the subject the seriousness it’s due. It feels almost like it’s only there for plot drama. Especially coupled with Instalove, which is a huge pet peeve for me. Ryder and Megan spend a few days together, then are apart for a week, then suddenly get married and he is better mentally?
Overall, this isn’t a bad book but not nearly as good as the others in this series. I was very disappointed with this one.
