Nobody just decides to be a hot mess.

I think somewhere along the way it just became who I was and I gracefully accepted the role…

I feel so utterly stuck. Unwanted by anyone I could ever see myself with and alone despite having two “roommates” who constantly hover and meddle in my life.

There are definitely repercussions for not pushing myself to be who I want to be. When I met my new next-door neighbor Wyatt, I didn’t think he would be the one to constantly challenge me. Tear me open and put me back together again in an entirely different way. The one who is dealing with his own repercussions as well…

“Mommy, why don’t I have a daddy?” My four-year-old daughter asks me.

The dreaded question that no single mother ever wants to hear, that your child is curious about why you are only half of a whole family. I knew the day would come when she would ask about her father, but I still wasn’t prepared.

My daughter will forever be my only choice. However, Bo, the man I kept in the dark about fathering a daughter, is pushing his way back into my – no- our life. Now, I will have to guard both our hearts while I allow him to get to know the daughter that I mistakenly kept him from.

But now I have a question for him.

Will she be his only choice?

Lucy by Jennifer Hanks

LucyLucy is book one in the DiMarco series by Jennifer Hanks. (I’ve already reviewed Kate, book 5.)

Lucy is the college best friend of Ben DiMarco. They are inseperable, but totally platonic. They feel more like brother and sister than anything. Ben is going home for his brother’s Memorial Day weekend wedding, and wants to stop his mother from trying to play matchmaker and get him to settle down. He thinks that if Lucy poses as his girlfriend, he will be left alone, no harm done. Lucy finally agrees, against her better judgement.

The one thing Lucy wasn’t counting on, however, was her instant attraction to Christian, one of Ben’s brothers. Christian is attracted to her, too, but thinks she’s with Ben and he won’t try anything with his brother’s girlfriend. Things get even more complicated when Ben fails to tell his family they broke up as planned, and Lucy has to maintain the charade through another holiday.

Lucy ends up getting a job in the DiMarcos’ town and moves there, and she and Christian start a relationship. Then Lucy is attacked. Luke DiMarco, the detective of the brothers, is working a case that ties to her attack. Ben rushes to her immediately. Christian can’t be sure who Lucy really wants, Ben or him. In the end, Christian finds out what happened to make Lucy and Ben so close, but can they make a relationship work after all the drama?

What I liked: The DiMarco family is captivating. I cannot comprehend being a part of such a large family but they are incredible. Lucy is a strong woman and fits in well with the family. I loved the DiMarco father, too. He stole my heart when I read Kate. He’s an idyllic father figure. There is a lot of depth to all of the characters as well. So many layers!

What I didn’t like: Christian’s moodiness got old but like I said, so many layers! More was going on with him than what’s on the surface. It’s infuriating but understandable.

Release Day – Small Town Heart by Andrea Johnston

Buy Links:

Without a plan in place and only a hundred dollars to my name, this big city girl born in a small town world headed for the bright lights of city life.
Four years later, I may have more money in my bank account, but somehow I’ve found myself back in another small town trying to build a life. Even though the residents of Fayhill have welcomed me like one of their own, this is only a detour, not a final destination.

Then I met Shane Abbott.

What’s a girl to do when a certain dark-haired dimpled cowboy, who fills out a pair of jeans like it’s his job with a smile that sets my soul on fire, has me considering burning my map?

The bright lights of city life never appealed to me. I like the quiet of small town life, and my hometown of Fayhill fits me to a T.

I never expected to meet Mercy Warner.

Love is the last thing on my mind. These days I work hard and mind my own business. So when a certain honey-haired spitfire blows into town, I take another look.
She may claim small town life isn’t for her, but the way she’s settling in tells me she might be open to the option. Refusing to let this opportunity to pass me by, I take another chance and put my small town heart on the line.

Surely the draw of the big city won’t burn me twice . . .

STH Big City Dreams - Peach Darker

“Please don’t do this. Please, Gerty.” I sound pathetic—begging my twenty-something-year-old teal hatchback to live. Yes, live. I need my car to get her shit together and get me to Austin. Looking at the gauges, I plead with them to tell me what’s wrong. That’s wishful thinking since they stopped working a year ago and the little arrow things bounce without telling me anything.

“Come on, girl. Look, six miles. You can do it.” My words are encouraging. Okay, they aren’t really encouraging. They’re more like begging with a sprinkling of frustration and the lingering sounds of tears lacing each word.

Six miles and we’ll be in the town of Fayhill. If I’m lucky, Gerty will hold on for at least eight and allow me to get closer to the center of town. I’ve been to this town once before and, while it’s been at least ten years, I’m sure it hasn’t changed much. That’s the brilliance of small Texas towns: they don’t change much. It’s also why I left small-town Texas: they don’t change much.

I won’t cry. This isn’t a big deal. We’ve broken down before. Sure, it was in a town where I knew a lot of people. A town with taxis that could get me home if necessary. Home. I refuse to admit defeat. That “d” word is not in my vocabulary. I glance up in my rearview mirror and don’t see smoke billowing behind me; that’s good. And, because I was obviously a sinner in my past life and am being punished for said unknown sins, a puff of smoke appears in front of me.

Dammit to hell. I’m going to be stranded in Fayhill, Texas. Fayhill, population . . . well, I don’t know what the population is, but I’m sure it’s less than what I’m looking for as I start my new life.

Review: The Hero and The Hacktivist by Pippa Grant

I downloaded this book when it was released Friday and devoured it that day. We met Rhett briefly in Stud In The Stacks and Eloise in a couple of Pippa’s books. This can definitely be read as a standalone, though, with no feelings of “I’m missing something here.”

Rhett is a Navy SEAL, sidelined Stateside by a mission that went bad. Eloise is drummer for Bro Code, the all-girl boy band cover band made up of Rhett’s sister Parker, Sia from Mister McHottie and Willow from Rockaway Bride.   Her bandmates/friends know she is an Internet wizard, but not a lot about her life or her story. They don’t even know where she actually lives.

Eloise and Rhett hook up at Parker’s wedding reception, because Eloise assumes Rhett is leaving town again and she won’t have to deal with him and deal with messy things like feelings. Rhett is staying, however, and is fascinated by her.

“Fucking her would probably be like fucking a sugared-up elf from an alternate dimension where Santa was actually a motorcycle-riding badass with vigilante tendencies.”

Eloise uses the Internet to go after bad people. She discovers that the “lady” behind the latest direct sales craze is really a skeezy man who is charming the desperate housewives out of their money and ruining hundreds of lives, and she gets revenge by reallocating his money to charities and exposing him for the fraud he is. Suddenly, she is being threatened and must depend on Rhett to keep her safe.

What I liked: This is the funniest book I have read in a long time. I literally laughed out loud throughout the entire thing. Eloise is a firecracker, in a very good way. I also loved finally getting to learn a little more about her, and her relationship with her brother is heart melting.

What I didn’t like: It ended! Why did it have to end??

Title: The Hero and the Hacktivist
Author: Pippa Grant
Genre: Sexy Romantic Comedy

 Release Date: November 9, 2018

A SEAL / Best Friend’s Brother / Robin Hood in Cyberspace Romantic Comedy
For anyone who’s ever been on the receiving end of an unsolicited dick pic…
He has the muscles of Adonis, an ego bigger than the sun, and a very clear desire to get back in my pants. Which would be fantastic if he weren’t a SEAL and I wasn’t a criminal.
Although, I prefer the term avenger.
I’m a hacktivist, cleaning up the cesspool of cyberspace one scam artist and troll at
a time, and I sometimes bend a few rules to get justice done.
He’s a military man with abs of glory, sworn to uphold the letter of the law no matter
its shortcomings. And if he’d known who—or what—I was, I doubt he would’ve
banged me at my best friend’s wedding reception.
Or come back for more.
Which is why he’s now the only thing standing between me and one very pissed off
internet troll who’s figured out where I live.
I’m pretty sure he’ll get me out of this alive—and quite satisfied, thank you very
much—but I’m also pretty sure this mission will end with me in handcuffs.
And not the good kind of handcuffs.
The Hero and the Hacktivist is a romping fun romance between a SEAL and a twisted hacker by day, drummer by night, complete with epic klutziness, terrible leg warmers, and an even worse phone virus gone wrong. This romantic comedy stands alone with no cheating or cliffhangers and ends with a fabulously fun happily ever

Cover Reveal: Maid in England by Brenda St John Brown

Title: Maid in England

Series: The I Do Crew #1

Author: Brenda St John Brown
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Cover Design: Frauke Spanuth, Croco Designs

Release Date: February 5, 2019

TO: The guy who dumped me
FROM: The woman hired to advance your career
RE: I am 150,000% over you.
I’m on the 11:14 train out of London, so I’ll be there by 3:00. To make this as painless as possible, I thought it would help to establish key ground rules:

  • No rehashing our past relationship. Yes, we were engaged, but it’s been twelve years and I’m over you.
  • I’m very good at my job and that job is to help you shed the “reclusive” part of the whole “reclusive rock star” vibe you’ve got going on. Brace yourself.
  • My plan is to have this wrapped up by Friday, so save your smoldering looks until I’m gone, please. (I assume you still smolder?) I’m immune now. See item #1.

I’ll see you in a few hours.
P.S. My cousin is getting married at the beginning of August. Guess who’s a bridesmaid? Funny, huh? Almost as funny as the fiancée you dumped because you thought she was married to her job now saving yours.
Have I mentioned I’m totally, completely 150,000% over you?

Before Girl by Kate Canterbary

She’s the girl next door.
He’s the guy who’s loved her from afar.
They’re in for an unexpected tumble into love.

Title: Before Girl
Author: Kate Canterbary
Release Date: November 13, 2018

She’ll juggle your balls.
For Stella Allesandro, chaos is good. She’s a rising star at a leading sports publicity firm. She’s known throughout the industry as the jock whisperer—the one who can tame the baddest of the bad boys in professional sports without losing her signature smile.

But Cal Hartshorn is an entirely different kind of chaos.

He’ll fix your broken heart.
This ex-Army Ranger and now-famous cardiothoracic surgeon fails at nothing…except talking to a woman he’s adored from afar. Whether on the battlefield or operating room, he’s exacting, precise, and efficient, but all of that crumbles when Stella is in sight.

Cal always knows—and gets—what he wants, and now he wants all of her. His forever girl.

But Stella isn’t convinced she’s anyone’s forever.

My review:

Cal and Stella meet while jogging in the park. He sees her first, and can’t stop thinking about her. After months of trying – and failing – to get the courage to speak to her, they end up colliding by accident one morning. He fixes up her cuts and scrapes and she insists on going for coffee. So begins their non-relationship.

What I liked: So much! Seriously, I had to make myself stop reading so I could go pick up my daughter from school. I’m entertained by lots of books, but this one made me *feel* what the characters felt. The butterflies, the awkwardness, the elation, the happiness, the heartbreaks, all of it. I also loved that these characters are not twentysomethings. Not that I have anything against twentysomethings, but it’s nice reading about characters in my own age group. Stella is 36 and a successful sports PR manager. She cleans up athletes’ messes and she’s good at it. Cal is 42 and a renown cardiothoracic surgeon. They aren’t angsty and full of unnecessary drama. The supporting characters also add a lot to the story.

What I didn’t like: I can’t really think of anything I didn’t like.

Torment, Mostly | The Ass(et)

Kate Canterbary doesn’t have it all figured out, but this is what she knows for sure: spicy-ass salsa and tequila solve most problems, living on the ocean–Pacific or Atlantic–is the closest place to perfection, and writing smart, smutty stories is a better than any amount of chocolate. She started out reporting for an indie arts and entertainment newspaper back when people still read newspapers, and she has been writing and surreptitiously interviewing people—be careful sitting down next to her on an airplane—ever since.

Kate lives on the water in New England with Mr. Canterbary and the Little Baby Canterbary, and when she isn’t writing sexy architects, she’s scheduling her days around the region’s best food trucks.

New Release: Royal Tease by Nana Malone

Title: Royal Tease

Series: Royals United Duet #1

Author: Nana Malone

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: November 13, 2018

Roone…The plan was simple, go undercover, protect my best friend’s little sister. It
should have been the easiest assignment of my life. But Jessa isn’t your usual princess. She’s feisty, and sexy, and stubborn, and
gorgeous. Did I mention she hates me? From the moment I carried her over my
shoulder out of a bar fight, I’ve been persona non grata.

But the stakes are too high to mess this up. The monarchy is at risk.

I can’t stand Roone Scot.

There I said it. Shoot me.

We go together like lightening and water. His quiet, steady obstinance is going
to cost me my job. A job I have worked very hard to keep. No one is messing
this up for me. I’ve had enough crazy in my life.

Not to mention the way his eyes track me every time I move, makes me
uncomfortable in an I-need-my-batter-operated-boyfriend kind of way.

But even if I wanted him – which I don’t, but if I did – I can’t ever have him.
My life is not my own. I’ve known that since birth.

(Book 1 in the Royals United Duet)

My review:

Roone is a Royal Guard, former SAS and best friends with the now King of some Caribbean island and his brother. Roone and his partner Ariel have been assigned to London to protect Jessa, who doesn’t know she’s a princess and sister to the king and his brother. She works at a PR firm and is good at her job. She does not like Roone, and resents being stuck with him as a coworker and neighbor (undercover). But there are sparks neither one of them can deny, and the more time they spend with each other not fighting, the more they actually like each other.

Fair warning, this book does end with a cliffhanger and book 2 will be released in January.

What I liked: Jessa’s attitude, and her ability to handle herself. Roone is a good guy, and they are good for each other. He resents not being allowed to tell her the truth about who he is and why he’s there but does everything he can to keep her safe anyway.

What I didn’t like: This feels like book 2 or 3 in a series, and not book 1. The back story of Roone, Sebastian, and Lucas is referred to repeatedly in vague terms, but something big happened and we have no idea what. Also, hello cliffhanger! But I did know what I was getting into with this book so I can’t hate on that too badly.

Overall, a good, interesting read but you probably want to wait until the second book is out and read them back to back to avoid CliffHangover.
